Physiotherapy Assistant - Haematology

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time physiotherapy assistant to join NUH's Haematology Rehabilitation Team at City Hospital. We are looking for a motivated, experienced individual who can contribute to a new rehabilitation service and deliver holistic rehabilitation to patients with blood cancer. You will work closely with both physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams. Some admin and housekeeping duties are required, for example data collection and management of walking aid stocks.

Nottingham is a specialist tertiary service and a recognised transplant unit for adults with lymphoma, myeloma and other haematological malignancies. The department actively participates in clinical trials. The service is amongst the largest of the UK's 53 centres, undertaking over 5% of all UK BMT activity and recently becoming accredited in CAR T-Cell therapy. The haematology/ oncology physiotherapy team sits within the wider medical inpatient physiotherapy team at City Campus, and some cross cover may be required at times. The role also includes weekend working.

We require a keen, conscientious, reliable team member with the ability to use your initiative and work flexibly. It is essential that you have experience working within rehabilitation or exercise settings, and of working within the NHS. Due to close working relationships with our occupational therapy colleagues, you must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and be organised and enthusiastic.

Main duties of the job

Please refer to the attached job description and person specification for full details of the job. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Working alongside physiotherapists and fellow support workers to provide rehabilitation and discharge planning for patients across the haematology/oncology wards at City Campus. Tasks will include gathering initial information, providing acute rehabilitation, assessing for walking aids, working with a wide range of equipment to promote independence, making onward referrals to community services.
• Working independently on your delegated caseload, prioritising appropriately, and alongside other members of the team where more than one staff member is required for a physio treatment.
• Providing administrative and clerical support to the team alongside the other support workers.
• Maintaining accurate records (patient records, stock and audit data)
• Developing and promoting effective professional working relationships with members of the team and the wider Multidisciplinary Team.
• Motivating and encouraging patients to participate in acute rehabilitation.
• Role modelling NUH values in your everyday practice.

You will be familiar with providing care to patients and working with a wide range of equipment to promote independence. You will possess excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a supportive team. You will be organised, motivated and self-directed to enable you to organise your workload and priorities.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies, Outpatients and Phlebotomy Services (TOPS) Directorate, within the Specialist Clinical Services care group. We are a diverse directorate of AHPs, nursing and support staff, employing around 1000 staff, working together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the directorate leadership team have AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.
