Job summary

This is clinical and leadership role, working with bereaved families and clinicians

The post holder will act as Deputy to the Band 7 Nurse/Midwife service manager. They will be required to:

o Act as a senior Bereavement Service specialist nurse/midwife working as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians to establish and resolve any concerns in relation to a patient's death and support the work of the Medical Examiners service in their responsibility for overseeing the death certification process for all deceased patients within the Trust and the wider community

o Act as deputy to the service manager, regularly taking charge of the day to day management of Bereavement Services and supporting the management of the Medical Examiners service where appropriate ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, families and clinical colleagues, together with the environment in which

o Assist in the strategic development and co-ordination of the Bereavement Services team

o Participate in ensuring the provision of the Bereavement Services team in conjunction with the Departmental Management Team

o Assist where appropriate in the receiving and releasing of patients who have died in the hospital or sudden unexpected deaths in the Community from trauma, suicide and violence or in suspicious circumstances. This may include deceased foetuses, babies and children, decomposed or infested patients, patients suffering from infectious / communicable diseases

Main duties of the job

1. Clinical

1.1 Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to the bereaved in line with the National requirements and legislation, and in collaboration with the departmental manager, identify common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.

2. Education

2.1 Undertaking a Training Needs Analysis within the defined area, linked to the performance management process and collate the results on an annual basis to inform the training plan for the area.

2.2 Involvement in a programme for performance management that ensures all staff within the Bereavement Services team are assessed annually which includes ensuring that all staff have a Personal Development Plan.
