Maternity Tobacco Dependence Support Advisor

Job responsibilities

Provide tobacco treatment advice and behavioural support to pregnant individuals identified as smokers at booking, working within recommended and evidence based protocols and guidelines.

Conducting highly sensitive and complex conversations to guide and support individuals in managing their tobacco dependency whilst pregnant and post natally.

To support the Tobacco Dependency Service operationally in line with NICE and other local and national guidelines.

Support with integrating tobacco dependency treatment as part of routine care in maternity services at NUH.

Manage incoming referrals to the in house Maternity Tobacco Dependency Service

Manage outgoing referrals to local community stop smoking providers.

Working within a variety of settings e.g. remotely, in clinic or ward setting, possibility of community locations.

Assess the needs of pregnant individuals and develop a tobacco treatment programme which is evaluated and implemented as appropriate.

Ensure tobacco dependency treatment is in place for pregnant individuals and following up patients at set time periods following intervention at booking.

Ensure all data required is captured for monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

Ensure smoking status and treatment plans are inputted correctly on patient records and information is communicated to all appropriate services.

Communicating regularly with the Tobacco dependence team and appropriate colleagues in maternity to highlight updates and issues to ensure the service runs smoothly.

Support with raising awareness to ward staff and maternity staff, on reducing harm from tobacco, Carbon monoxide monitoring and promoting the smokefree site policy.

Highlight any inequalities or barriers in accessing tobacco dependence support.

Collaborative working across the Nottinghamshire and Nottingham Integrated Care Board, including community stop smoking services.

Plan, organise and make decisions on own workload.

Develop knowledge and keep updated of relevant national/local strategies

Referring to the Safeguarding team when issues such as domestic abuse arise.

Training & Qualifications

Essential

• GCSE level English and Mathematics or equivalent
• NVQ level 3/4 or equivalent health related studies OR substantial successful experience delivering stop smoking interventions / support
• Smoking Cessation Training level 2/NCSCT completed/in process of completion
• Willingness to undertake further qualification relevant to the role.

Desirable

• Experience of working in a hospital setting.
• Experience of working with pregnant women and their partners.

Experience

Essential

• Previous experience of providing advice and support on a one to one and group basis to enable a behaviour change.
• Experience of facilitating client centred behaviour change programmes.
• Understanding of current issues and practice relating to tobacco use and smoking cessation.
• Effective use of record keeping and monitoring systems.
• Working collaboratively within a team to achieve common goals

Desirable

• Previous experience in a healthcare setting
• Previous experience of counselling/motivational interviewing.
• Experience of using clinical systems.
• Experience of facilitating multi agency collaboration and ability to work with all levels of staff to develop effective networks and alliances.
• Understanding of theories and models related to smoking cessation.

Physical skills

Essential

• Safely carry out the manual handling of equipment e.g. phone/laptop. CO monitor (under 5kg)
• Frequent requirement for use of computer (therefore extended time spent sitting)
• Standing/Sitting for long periods

• Prepared to work at both QMC, City and community sites, as well as remote working.
