Eye Casualty is currently open from 07:00 until 22:00 hours and 7 days a week so any applicants must be able to work flexibly for those hours and on any of those days. It is a busy but very interesting and specialised area to work in.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to be adaptable and be able to work flexibly in diverse clinical environments maintaining clinical experience as required.

Evidence of on-going registration will be required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Eye Casualty and Laser Suite at QMC.

Clinical

HWB 2Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the

HWB6Development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate.

Core 1 Document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and/or senior nursing staff any areas of concern.

HWB 5 Undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines, including intravenous cannulation, venepuncture and the administration of intravenous medications, intravenous fluorescein angiography and including specific procedures relevant to patients attending Eye Outpatients.

Core 2 Demonstrate clinical procedures to registered and unregistered staff as required.

HWB6 Once competent in team management skills, take charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy.

All Participate in the support and implementation of Essence of Care guidelines

HWB 5 Be aware of your role with regard to the Medicines Code of Practice.

Core 3 Comply with all Trust policies with particular regard to the policies and procedure carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.

Core 5 Liaise with other clinical areas providing appropriate policies, education and clinical expertise in order to facilitate the management of patients with special requirements.

Core 1 Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy.

Core 1 Maintain accurate patient records including the use of the Trusts electronic patient records system PAS.

Core 1 Communicate with and provide support for patients relatives, carers and visitors.

Core 1 Be aware of the need for confidentiality both within the writtenand spoken word, and electronic records, and ensure correct storage of and access to patients records at all times.

Core 1 Liaise with other clinical areas as necessary for the coordination ofpatient care and the smooth running of the ward/unit/department.

Managerial

Core 2 Support a culture of teamwork within the clinical area

Core 2 Collaborate with all members of the clinical area to ensure efficient running of the ward/unit/department.

Use resources effectively in order to provide quality patient care whilst having an awareness of budgetary issues.

Core 2 Assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in introducing new members ofstaff to their duties.

Core3 Supervise registered and unregistered staff as appropriate.

Core 3 Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patientsproperty in accordance with Trust policy.

Core 2 Ensure where appropriate that the programmes of training for learners, both student nurses and nursing auxiliaries/health care assistants are completed.

Core 2 Undertake formal and informal teaching sessions as required andundertake training to act as a mentor to students.

Following appropriate training, carry the directorate/floor bleep.

Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and use ofresources.

Core 4 Contribute to the improvement of services where appropriate

Training and Qualification

Essential

• Must have NMC Registration
• Diploma or degree in health/nursing related studies
• Continuing professional development and reflective profile

Desirable

• Have or willing to undertake a suitable Teaching and Assessing Qualification
• Ophthalmic Nursing Qualification e.g ENB 346 Possession of a Mentoring Course
• Completion of Basic or Advanced Life Support - Adult and Paediatric
• Completion of Ophthalmology role development or skills

Experience

Essential

• Current or Recent ophthalmic nursing experience or courses
• Supervision of non registered staff and students

Desirable

• Assessment and treatment of eye emergencies

Communication and Relationship

Essential

• Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrate Basic IT skills
• Recognition of own level of competence and limitations and able to communicate these to appropriate staff
