Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, with a special interest in Stroke. This is a maternity leave cover of 9 months. The post holder will be working with a team of SLTs and SLT assistants, working across the Stroke pathway from hyper acute to rehabilitation. They will be working alongside clinical specialists and leads in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy providing strong AHP leadership into a close multidisciplinary team.

The post holder will be taking the lead in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients who may have highly complex needs. They will be supporting the training and development of other staff and ensuring the service is adhering to Stroke guidelines. This post offers the opportunity to use and further develop skills in the use of instrumental assessments.

They will be well supported by an excellent team with leadership and management support. There is support from within Speech and Language Therapy and the wider Therapies directorate and plenty of clinical and leadership development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside the senior SLT leadership team to influence the strategy of how we deliver our services. The post holder will work within the Stroke SLT team leading our work across the acute stroke pathway. They will provide clinical leadership to the SLTs in that team and across the broader SLT service. They will support the operational lead with the delivery of the service and a key role will be scoping out the role and the future needs of the service.

Applicants should have excellent organisation skills and be able to manage a caseload and set priorities. They will provide supervision and second opinions to less experienced members of staff. They will work closely with the multi-professional teams at NUH. They should have advanced skills working with swallowing and communication difficulties, and ideally tracheostomy management.

They will need excellent communication and leadership skills, be adaptable and confident to work autonomously and with other members of staff within a supportive team.

We are looking for an SLT who is enthusiastic, motivated, able to evidence continuing professional development and keen to develop themselves and others.

About us

NUH is a large teaching hospital, with multiple sites. The acute Speech & Language Therapy service provides services to adults, paediatrics and neonatal services and works alongside a separate ENT SLT service. We work within a very broad range of acute specialties including Healthcare of the Older Person, Respiratory, and Critical Care. NUH host a number of regional services including Neurosciences unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke unit, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. We also have SLTs working within neuro- rehabilitation both inpatient and outpatient services. We are part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Directorate.
