Job summary

The overarching purpose of the job is to provide the coordination of research and innovation projects across a complex footprint, involving a range of NHS providers, academic and industry partners and other stakeholders.

The Research Co-ordinator will manage the development and implementation of research and innovation activities within the East GMSA. They will need to develop a good understanding of the genomic research/trials landscape within the region and possible translational pathways to allow them to monitor progress against objectives/milestones; prepare reports and presentations for internal and external audiences and signpost researchers to available resources. They will act as the first point of contact for the GMSA research agenda and provide a key link between the GMSA and NHSE with regards to key performance indicators and assurance evidence.

Main duties of the job

The Research Co-ordinator will be a key member of the core GMSA management team. They will work closely with the Clinical Director, Strategy Director, Innovation Director, senior clinical team members, other regional GMSA Research Coordinators, and staff throughout the East Midlands and East of England geography to ensure the effective management of the genomic research programme.

Internal Relationships:

This post will be a core member of the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance representative of the four NHS Trust Alliance Partners and build strong links with the East of England and East Midlands GLH, Local Genomic Laboratories (LGLs) and Clinical Genetics Services (CGS) across the region.

External Relationships:

NHSE/I Genomics Unit, National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres, NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, NIHR Clinical Research Networks (CRNs), NHS Trust Provider Research and Development departments, Higher Education Institutions, Health Innovation East (HIE) and East Midlands (HIEM), the Life Sciences Industry and Cancer Alliances.

The East GMSA is an Alliance Partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Norfolk and Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. While recruitment for this role is being coordinated by CUH, the successful candidate will be employed by and located at the nearest NHS Trust Alliance Partner within the East GMSA.

Essential

  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent level experience of working at a senior level in a specialist area
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Qualification in project or programme management or equivalent professional experience
  • PhD in scientific area or evidence of understanding of research processes/environments

Experience /Knowledge

Essential

  • Project or operational management experience working within an academic or NHS environment, working with researchers, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals at all level of the organisation
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships
  • An understanding of the clinical trial process in the UK, including how individuals can participate in clinical research programmes
  • An understanding and experience of the UK research funding landscape including experience of working with partners such as the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR)
