Job summary

We are looking for an energetic and proactive individual to join the Pharmacy Team at the Nottingham City Hospital campus. As a Pharmacy Porter you will play an integral part in the delivery of medicines to our hospital wards and clinics in a timely and efficient manner.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to join the Pharmacy Dispensary team and work an alternating two-week pattern;

Week 1: Monday and Tuesday 11:00am to 7.30pmSaturday and Sunday 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Week 2:Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11:00am to 7.30pm

No previous experience in Pharmacy is required as full in-house training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Along with another Pharmacy Porter, the post holder will provide a medicines transport service to the City Hospital campus wards and clinics which supports patients receiving medicines in a timely way, to include those being discharged from hospital. These duties will include:

- Collecting all medicines from the Pharmacy Dispensary,

- Delivering all medicines to wards and clinic areas in accordance with the daily schedule,

- Ensuring that all Pharmacy safe systems of work and procedures are adhered to in accordance with the handling of controlled drugs,

- Completing all necessary paperwork to create and audit trail of medicines delivered,

- Deliver a safe and high-quality service to our patients and hospital wards/clinics.

Job description

Job responsibilities

- Ability to complete the Buttercups Pharmacy Qualification for Stock Management with support from the Pharmacy Education and Training Team.

- Deliver completed pharmacy orders and collect empty Pharmacy 'envopak' bags to and from wards/clinics/departments and the Pharmacy Store at the City Hospital campus.

- Able to drive the Pharmacy tug (a clean driving licence is required for this), ensuring road worthiness is maintained.

- Provide a regular pick-up and delivery system for dispensed medicines to wards at agreed times, to collect fluid orders, emergency requisitions and Controlled Drug orders, ensuring that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.

- Pack the items into sealed delivery bags following departmental Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring deliveries are handed to the correct member of hospital staff. As this service will include the delivery of Controlled Drugs, written receipt must be obtained and the numbered tag matched to the paperwork by a trained member of ward staff (all following departmental Standard Operating Procedures).

- Collect and sort Pharmaceutical and Non Pharmaceutical waste from designated areas in the Pharmacy and deliver to the appropriate disposal point, ensuring that the relevant paperwork is correct and departmental guidelines are followed.

- Support to restock shelves in Pharmacy, ensuring good stock rotation.

- To correctly dispose of domestic and recyclable waste.

- Answer the Pharmacy Dispensary telephone and deal with face to face enquiries of a routine nature from a wide range of hospital staff groups and refer appropriate queries to the relevant member of the Pharmacy team.

- Confident to communicate information between the wards and Pharmacy accurately and efficiently.

- Deliver stock medicines (including cytotoxics) and special orders to defined locations around the hospital as designated by the Pharmacy Dispensary or Stores and Distribution Lead Technicians.

- Assist in the training of new staff within the department, including relief Portering staff, in the pick-up and delivery system from Pharmacy areas.

- Participate in the departmental individual performance review system (PDR) as an appraisee.

- Participate in the Bank Holiday rotas and 7 day shift working.

Any other reasonable duties as agreed with the Pharmacy Dispensary Lead or Chief Technician.

Duties of the post within Pharmacy are performed in an area of restricted space with variable temperatures depending on the weather conditions. There is a requirement for a significant amount of bending, stretching, heavy lifting and handling in the day to day duties. Frequent outdoor journeys means there will be exposure to inclement weather conditions.
