Job summary

The Quality Control Unit has dedicated purpose built quality control laboratories (Chemistry and Microbiology) and a team of 15-20 Quality Control and Quality Assurance staff and is looking to recruit a QC Analyst with experience in microbiological testing.

We are looking for a enthusiastic, highly motivated and committed QC analyst with excellent communication skills to join us.

Main duties of the job

The role holder will organise the environmental monitoring in the viable and non-viable environmental monitoring of a number of clean room suites both within the Trust and for external clients for whom the department provides a service.

They will also carry out microbiological techniques including sterility tests, total viable counts, microbiological assay, preservative efficacy tests and endotoxin tests, according to written procedures, or pharmacopoeial monographs.

Responsible for managing the environmental monitoring program (including particle counting) and the checking of the environmental conditions within the laboratories and clean room facilities for internal and external clients (approx. 60% of role).

Responsible for producing reports for particle counting of clean room facilities and, reporting the results to the Quality Assurance team.

Reading microbiological results from environmental monitoring plates including: settle and contact plates, and record those results using the LIMS system to forward to Quality Assurance for assessment.

Carrying out microbiological techniques including sterility tests, total viable counts, microbiological assay, preservative efficacy tests and endotoxin tests, according to written procedures, or pharmacopoeial monographs.

Carrying out booking-in of samples onto the laboratory LIMS system and spreadsheets

Assisting in the maintenance and update of written methods and worksheets for all procedures carried out in the laboratories.

Assisting in maintaining media, reagent and glassware stocks, ordering and accepting deliveries from appropriate suppliers and checking against the appropriate documentation for invoice approval, where applicable.

Supporting work in the Chemistry laboratory when required.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to a minimum of BSc or equivalent in a Science based degree.
  • Willingness to undertake further training in specific QC procedures and able to pass required competency tests.
  • A full Driving Licence is essential as the role involves driving to carry out work for external clients.

Experience

Essential

  • A good understanding of viable and non-viable environmental monitoring techniques
  • Substantial experience in microbiology QC techniques.

Desirable

  • At least 1 years' experience in the use of environmental monitoring equipment including non-viable particle monitoring.
  • Experienced in a range of chemistry QC techniques.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential

  • Good communication skills, able to liaise with all grades of staff, and external clients. Able to communicate results effectively and write summary environmental monitoring reports.

Desirable

  • Experience in supervision of staff
  • Experience of writing procedures

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential

  • Thorough and accurate work required for interpretation of laboratory results, and calibrations. Judgement required for prompt reporting to senior members of staff where necessary, or in their absence to other departmental managers. Able to utilise knowledge of scientific principles in the development of microbiological methods and techniques.

Desirable

  • Experience of conducting out specification investigations

Planning and organisation skills

Essential

  • Able to manage and organise monthly and quarterly environmental visits with a variety of clients. Able to plan the workload required meeting laboratory deadlines and customer priorities. Able to maintain weekly and monthly equipment and environmental checks. Experience of arranging service contracts with suppliers for maintenance and calibration of equipment.

  • Able to carry and transport heavy equipment from one site to another.
