Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated, dynamic practitioner with the appropriate clinical experience to work closely with our existing band 6 colleagues and team leader to support the pre- operative team specifically at the Edward Unit (City Campus) , B50 and Treatment Centre (QMC campus)

We are looking to recruit a Part Time post (Permanent 19 hours per week)

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate strong leadership skills to enable management of staff, coordination of the cross- site units and to deputise on behalf of the Unit Sister. You will be an effective role model demonstrating high levels of clinical competence and expertise. You should also be able to demonstrate involvement in service improvement, with some evidence of change management.

You will demonstrate skills in self-management, including time management, prioritisation and organisational skills. You will need to have a flexible attitude to work, be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and have the capacity to go the extra mile.

Main duties of the job

To assess the physical, social and psychological needs of patients and to plan individual patient care in relation to elective admission accordingly. To provide pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative information to the appropriate persons. Ensure the patient's journey is as seamless as possible to theatre and cancellations of procedures are minimal.

To establish and maintain good working relationships within the multidisciplinary team and to work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues across the Trust to enhance quality of care and share best practice.

To work unsupervised and give advice to juniors regarding suitability for surgery

To ensure delivery of high standards of care in accordance with up-to-date evidence based professional practice and Trust policies.

We pre-assess around 400 patients a week. This nurse led clinic supported by consultant anaesthetists is a fast developing service. We provide adult pre-operative assessments for patients undergoing operations under general anaesthetic and regional block for a range of surgical specialties.

Job responsibilities

Assess patients suitability and fitness for surgery and anaesthesia using agreed protocols.

To take a targeted history of the patient including airway assessment.

Conduct assessment of both the medical and psychological status of elective surgical patients, including carrying out physical assessment of the patient as required.

To order and perform diagnostic tests within set protocols and working to agreed actions where abnormalities are discovered.

To ensure all test results are available for day of surgery.

To recognise the significance of any observation made and use them to highlight situations which may be detrimental to the health and well being of the patient.

Refer patients who fall outside the agreed criteria to an anaesthetist, who may then make further referrals.

Refer patient back to primary care or another healthcare professional to optimise the patients medical condition, according to local guidelines.

To provide information about the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative process, ensuring the patient has an understanding of the proposed procedure and any specific preoperative instructions.

To identify any specific requirements needed to facilitate prompt discharge.

Contact all patients failing to attend pre-operative assessment to identify the reason. Act on the reason, following Trust protocols for the management of DNAs in pre-operative assessment.

To communicate effectively and liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team and primary care team as appropriate.

To comply at all times with the NMC code of conduct.

Work autonomously and as part of a team.

Support the Sister to maximise the best use of clinical resources, implementing best practice to facilitate patient flow throughout the department.

To participate in the recruitment and retention of staff.

Liaise with the booking office staff, of the relevant speciality to co-ordinate relisting of the patients surgery, the booking of pre-operative assessment clinics, or follow up appointment for further treatments and to ensure that notes and relevant documentation are ready for the patients pre-operative assessment and subsequent admission.
