Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Nottingham University Hospitals for a permanent 0.5 Band 6 Physiotherapist to join a well-established physiotherapy team on AICU at the Queens Medical Centre. This team also provides a physiotherapy service on specialist medical wards.

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and dynamic individual who is passionate about respiratory physiotherapy and early rehabilitation on Intensive Care.

The successful candidate will be involved in the day to day management of patients within a 29 bedded Level 2/3 AICU. You will be competent in managing the respiratory and rehabilitation needs of a critical care patient, as part of the MDT. You will be expected to lead the team in the absence of a band 7, and contribute to service development and the development of more junior staff. You will need to be flexible at adapting to meet the needs of the team which may require you to cover clinical work on the medical wards outside of critical care.

You will be involved in the development of on call and junior staff through a comprehensive training programme, of theoretical and practical sessions using the critical care simulation suite.

The successful candidate will have completed a broad range of rotations at band 5 level, including Respiratory. You will also have had experience of working in critical care at a band 6 level, with experience in managing Neurological, Spinal and Major Trauma patients.

Main duties of the job

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing and treating patients as appropriate in adult intensive care and ward environments.
  • Working as part of multidisciplinary teams in all clinical areas.
  • Participating in ward rounds
  • Providing supervision to more junior staff (including Band 5, support workers and students)
  • Deputising for Band 7's as needed
  • Working alongside the band 7's and seniors in the team to develop the service in line with evidence based practice
  • Supporting student placements within the team and provide formal and informal training
  • Providing a supportive and learning environment for team members; including undertaking annual appraisals and supporting health and wellbeing.
  • Leading by example ensuring that trust values and behaviours are embedded in everyday practice.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.
