Burns & Plastics Static Occupational Therapist

Job summary

We have a unique opportunity for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the Burns and Plastics service at NUH, a regional unit for burns care, on a 12 month fixed term or secondment basis. We are small friendly team who are privileged to work with both adults and children throughout their journey from an inpatient to an outpatient. A typical day involves a mixture of inpatient assessments and outpatient appointments, both face-face and virtually, so no one day is the same! In this role you will gain knowledge of scar management assessment and interventions such as pressure garments, use specialist equipment within functional upper limb rehabilitation and develop splinting and bracing skills. Prior experience in burns or musculoskeletal settings is not essential as we are primarily seeking someone who has an interest in burns and plastics, is proactive and has a desire to learn.

Provide scar management assessment and treatments within an outpatient setting

Complete hand and upper limb assessments and interventions

Fit and fabricate a variety of splints and braces

Work flexibly and autonomously across a variety of settings

Supporting patients holistically following trauma

Additional responsibilities for Band 6:

Provide support, training and supervision to more junior staff (support staff and students)

Demonstrate leadership qualities and deputise for the Band 7 team leader as appropriate

Manage more complex inpatient and outpatients

Engage in service development projects

Possible weekend working

Provide goal orientated upper limb interventions such as home exercise programmes, person-centred functional rehabilitation/ work hardening using specialist equipment such as BTE Primus RS

Fit and fabricate a variety of splints hand/upper limb custom made thermoplastic splinting and off the shelf upper and lower limb braces

Demonstrate creativity in problem solving

Work flexibly and autonomously across a variety of settings including outpatient consultant/dressings clinics, wards and possible outreach visits.

Support patients holistically following trauma- signposting and referring onto appropriate services as required

Demonstrate proactive nature to own learning

At a band 6 level further duties include:

Participate and lead in-service and student training and provide informal and possible formal supervision of junior and support staff

Demonstrate leadership qualities including delegation and prioritisation

Deputise for the Band 7 team leader as appropriate
