Job description

Job responsibilities

A new role has been developed for an Andrology Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Urology department.

This role will encompass the assessment, treatment and follow-up of patients experiencing erectile dysfunction from a variety of aetiologies. A good working knowledge of Urology, including urological conditions, cancers, surgeries and medication and their side-effects is essential for this role.

The successful nurse will also require a good knowledge of medications/therapies which affect erectile dysfunction, or which contra-indicate the use of particular treatment options.

The andrology clinic is well-established and has been running successfully for a number of years within the Urology department. It has undergone several changes, including the development of the penile implant service for men with terminal erectile dysfunction.

The nurse will work closely with Mr Bazo who leads on Andrology within NUH Urology. They will also work alongside nursing and medial colleagues, and develop a relationship with the Chandos clinic which provides psycho-sexual counselling services.

Currently, the service runs 2 sessions per week for general andrology patients, plus services for post robotic-prostatectomy patients which are provided by the CNS team. There is a planned role change for the nurse who currently runs this service, necessitating the recruitment and training of a replacement to ensure continuation of service in this sensitive area.

Training of a new nurse in this area is likely to take 3-6 months, depending on prior experience, and requires teaching of assessment skills, appropriate treatment choices, patient teaching of self-injection, and counselling skills for penile implants.

The nurse will be required to liaise with theatres and company reps in order to plan implant surgery, visit the Urology ward to provide post-op care for implant patients, and ensure all follow-up care, including TTOs and clinic review, is in place before patients are discharged. There may be scope to develop an intra-operative role, however this has not yet been fully explored.

Good IT skills are required, along with knowledge of Excel as penile implant databases must be kept up to date, both in-house and at a national level for BAUS requirements.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, including opportunities for publication and presentation at conference. It is recommended that the nurse becomes a BAUN member.
