Fertility Sister- Nurse Specialist

Job summary

The Fertility Nurse Specialist will work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient. They will care for and manage their own caseload of patients and evaluate and vet new referrals to the unit both NHS and private and assign to appropriate clinician

As a Specialist nurse you will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to develop the service in order to meet the needs of patients and their families demonstrating clinical judgement and critical decision making skills based upon evidence based practice.

The role will require you to provide specialist training across functional boundaries and to develop and implement training packages for nursing teams, maintaining your own competence and assessing junior colleagues

You will be responsible for the line management of junior colleagues and also be involved with QRS elements of the service.

This is a training post and the successful candidate will be paid as a band 6 until all competencies are met

Main duties of the job

  • In conjunction with multidisciplinary team develop evidence based patient care policies and procedures, develop and contribute to clinical guidelines and protocols and lead the implementation process as required
  • Independently organise and perform fertility investigations and treatments
  • Be a visible point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives, and staff, acting as a resource for the patients / clients acting as the patients advocate, evaluating patient processes and re-designing the pathway of care in collaboration with the senior management team.
  • Provide specialist support to clinical teams in dealing with the complex needs of different client groups and when imparting or receiving sensitive, complex or contentious information.
  • Management of early pregnancy complications (including ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage), referring to gynaecology where appropriat
  • To ensure that informed consent is given and the appropriate unit and Human Embryology Authority consent forms are completed for the treatment cycle, discussing the risks associated with fertility treatment.

Job responsibilities

  • Take patient (couple) history (according to agreed proforma), organise investigations and management of treatment as part of ongoing fertility investigations in line with the fertility care pathway with the support of the lead Fertility Consultant. Provide pre-conceptual advice, promoting health and wellbeing to optimise positive treatment outcome
  • In conjunction with multidisciplinary team develop evidence based patient care policies and procedures, develop and contribute to clinical guidelines and protocols and lead the implementation process as required
  • Independently organise and perform fertility investigations and treatments including intra-uterine insemination, tubal patency testing by Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) along with the radiology department, donor insemination treatment cycles including the matching of donors to recipients and organisation of artificial insemination using partner sper
  • Arrange and discuss results of semen analysis, test wash and sperm storage where appropriat
  • Be a visible point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives, and staff, acting as a resource for the patients / clients acting as the patients advocate, evaluating patient processes and re-designing the pathway of care in collaboration with the senior management team
  • Ensure that patient care plans are regularly updated, changes implemented, maintaining accurate patient records. To keep accurate records for each patient of all communication and clinical activity relevant to her/his treatment, in line with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulations.
  • Organise multidisciplinary meetings to discuss patient management as required
  • Provide specialist support to clinical teams in dealing with the complex needs of different client groups and when imparting or receiving sensitive, complex or contentious information.
