Job summary

We have a wonderful opportunity for a motivated clinical scientist to join the Radiation Physics section within the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering department at Nottingham University Hospitals. This is an opportunity for an ambitious individual with an interest in diagnostic radiology and/or radiation protection, to contribute to the development and improvement of a wide range of techniques supporting a comprehensive clinical service.

You should be a registered clinical scientist, or clearly eligible for registration, with experience of diagnostic radiology and radiation protection in healthcare.

The post holder will be encouraged, in time, to develop towards RPA and MPE certification and take part in the research activities of the section.

Hours will be 1 WTE, 37.5 hours per week, with flexible working hours, as the service requires with candidates agreement. Consideration will also be given to part time working.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve:

Providing support to Diagnostic Radiology by supporting the departments work on the quality assurance of x-ray generating equipment, optimization and patient dosimetry programmes and regulatory compliance.

Participation in the teaching and training delivered by the department to a range of staff grades.

Participation in research and development activities.

Due to the nature of our service delivery, candidates will need to be able to work to deadlines and will be expected to travel across the region. A UK Driving license is desirable.

About us

The NUH NHS Trust is a large, busy teaching hospital comprising of two sites, the Queens Campus and the City Campus. The Queens Campus provides acute services supporting a very busy emergency service and trauma centre and the City Campus supports Radiotherapy and Cardiac services.

Radiation Physics is a large team of clinical scientists and technologists providing specialist services, scientific and technical expertise to healthcare organisations for ionising and non-ionising radiation. The applicant will be based at QMC Campus. The Radiation Physics service operates over both sites and works for several other NHS Trust sites over the region. The service supports a wide range of equipment including hybrid interventional and neuroradiology units, Advanced CT and PET CT, mammography .

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

Provides scientific support to Diagnostic Radiology including:

Assisting the sections work in optimisation of medical exposures.

Undertaking quality assurance tests on a range of x-ray generating equipment

Participating in patient dosimetry programmes including the routine patient dosimetry

programme.

Assisting in radiation and patient safety activities to support these imaging modalities

Calculate information regarding radiation exposure to staff, patients and, if appropriate, their carers. In particular assess the risks arising from ionising radiation and put these into a context that can be understood by patients or carers to provide reassurance.

Perform risk assessments to ensure that radiation doses received by staff, patients and members of the public are as low as reasonably practicable.

Maintain registration as a Clinical Scientist.

Participate in maintaining the scientific and technical quality of the Radiation Physics service

Participate in reviewing and developing procedures to ensure the continuing evidence base of the service.

Keep abreast of the latest technical and scientific developments in own specialist area and their applications in medical and associated fields. Contribute to the maintenance of statistical information as required for audit, clinical governance and management purposes

Participate in and support research and development within the department as agreed with the Head of Section.

Analyse and interpret the results from R & D studies for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer review journals.

Physical & Financial Resources

Participate in the delivery of quality assurance programmes ensuring that all appropriate quality control is performed. Assist with determining the appropriate form and frequency of the tests required for each piece of equipment to ensure that accurate images and results are obtained to give the correct diagnosis.

Participate in acceptance testing of new equipment to ensure that it meets its specification and is safe to use with patients

Use resources effectively in order to provide quality patient care whist having an awareness of budgetary issues.

Human Resource

Maintain own professional competence through on going professional development to standards defined by the relevant professional and regulatory bodies to include clinical supervision, annual mandatory training, appraisal process and personal development planning

Prioritise and manage own workload.

Provide tutorials and supervise trainee clinical scientists and clinical technologists on placements in the section.

Participate in the provision of training of medical physics staff and other groups of healthcare professionals within the Trust and other organisations.

Supervise and assess registered and unregistered staff as appropriate.

Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary teams in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication.
