Specialising in Decontamination & Sterilisation of medical devices and surgical instruments the Sterile Services team plays an important role in the health and well-being of our patients.
As a Production Manager, you will provide a high-quality service to support the cleaning and inspection, assembly and packing of sterile equipment to our customers.
Working in a working in a fast-paced environment, where quality and precision is vital, your key responsibilities will include liaising with Theatres and other clients; responding rapidly to emergency equipment requests and trouble-shooting delays, bottlenecks or performance issues.
You will act as first-line response for any potential cancelled operations, business continuity issues or resource issues. Providing a rapid escalation of any unresolved issues to the Management Team and an exceptional customer experience.
Main duties of the job
As an integral part of the Management Team, you will be responsible for the day to day operational management of the production areas. Working closely with the supervisory team as their line manager, you will lead on key projects to support the continuous service improvement, maximising quality, efficiency and productivity and to minimising waste.
You will also be responsible for:
- Ensuring decontamination production equipment is maintained, serviceable and fit for use.
- Ensuring stock levels are maintained for the decontamination process.
- Ensuring all equipment for the tracking and tractability system is fit for use with suitable spares in stock.
- Managing departmental critical machine spares stock and liaise with the Engineering team to ensure there is minimal production down time.
- Supporting the implementation of new decontamination standards and the development and implementation of Quality Objectives, KPIs and Quality System Procedures.
- Monitoring and 360o reporting performance against all objectives, targets and indicators.
- Monitoring risk governance and working with the Sterile Services Manager to reduce and mitigate risks associated with production activities.
- Monitoring production productivity, providing detailed reports to identify trends and seek efficiencies to improve productivity and streamline processes.
- Liaising with logistics to ensure efficient and effective transportation of medical equipment.
About us
Our Sterile Services Department cleans, disinfects, packs and sterilises over 300,000 reusable surgical instruments per month for over 70 operating theatres, plus other clinical areas throughout the Trust. We also provide services to health centres and other external customers. The department is one of the biggest and busiest in the country and is operational 24/7. The department is based at the QMC Campus, with a receipt and distribution centre servicing City Hospital Campus.

Operational Management of Sterile Services Production
- Day-to-day duty management of the Sterile Services Department during peak hours.
- Deputising for the management team as and when required.
- Authorised signatory for financial payments, agency usage and overtime.
- Allocation of and delegation to all members of the Sterile Services workforce in response to peaks and troughs of activity and changes in operational performance.
- Direct Line Management of the Sterile Services Coordinators (Band 4) and Assistant Coordinators (Band 3)
- Liaison with Theatres staff and other internal and external clients regarding their equipment requirements, in order to provide a known and trusted point of contact and a consistent level of customer service.
- Responding rapidly to urgent and emergency equipment requests in order to prevent delays in Theatres and other clinical departments.
- Providing an exceptional customer experience and seeking customer feedback in order to improve trust, communication and customer loyalty. Making customers feel listened to and valued.
- Managing production processes and turnaround times proactively in order to ensure reliable and efficient availability of medical equipment for all clinical areas.
- Trouble-shooting and responding to delays, bottlenecks and performance issues in order to minimise the impact to customers.

- Supporting the Sterile Services Manager with the implementation of new and evolving, national and international decontamination standards and guidance.
