Job summary

Ward D58 is a specialty ward of Health Care of Older People (HCOP) based in the Queens Medical Centre. We are committed to providing the best care for older people with a stable, well supported and motivated workforce. Our pathways and treatment of our vulnerable patient group are at the leading edge within the field. We are innovative and constantly looking for ways to improve the service we provide and exploring new roles in practice.

Within HCOP there are opportunities to complete the Frailty module which forms part of the degree pathway which is a new bespoke module focused solely on the older person and the complexities of caring for them and an ageing population. There are also opportunities to progress up the nursing ladder into advanced clinical practitioner roles.

We have a caring and supportive team, dedicated to the continuing delivery of safe and excellent care which is supported by our exceptional patient feedback. We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic and highly motivated to join our ward leadershipteam.

The role of the Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse on D58 is to support the team and the ward manager. You will co-ordinate the ward, ensuring that patients are receiving excellent care and continuous communication with doctors, relatives and patients.

As a leader, the deputy is expected to support the nursing team throughout the shift and manage any issues or concerns as they arise.

You will work with the supportive ward leadership team to drive forward positive change on the ward. You will have dedicated management days to complete audits, appraisals, create action plans, and investigate incidences and to develop your leadership skills.

Job responsibilities

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Manager, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.

In collaboration with the Ward Manager, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and redesigning the pathway of care.

Improve and maintain standards of essential nursing care by working with the Ward Manager and using tools to ensure clinical audit takes place in line with the Trusts requirements to improve practice.

During regular clinical sessions, act as a role model and teacher, working alongside other staff including visiting all patients in the ward.

Act as the deputy to the ward sister/charge nurse regularly taking charge of the ward and ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered, are maintained at a high standard.

Be an effective leader and role model and will be expected to provide regular direct clinical care and use experience to support the implementation of both clinical and non-clinical governance.

Work flexibly as a member of the ward team and in support of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improve.
