Job summary

Nottingham : Genomics and Molecular Medicine Service ( Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics)

Vacancy for a Full time MLA (Band 2) - fixed term

The post is funded for 37.5 hours per week (1.0wte)

The Genomics and Molecular Medicine department has vacancies in the rare disease and cancer genomics sections for a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) (band 2). We would be pleased to receive applications from anyone with an interest in genomics. This job will require attention to detail and an ability to follow procedures accurately. The ideal applicant will have good communication and basic IT skills. Experience of working in a laboratory or NHS environment would be desirable but is not essential. Experience of using computer databases and of handling pathological samples would also be an advantage. The role includes specimen receipt, computer entry and a range of general laboratory duties such as DNA/RNA extraction. The successful candidate will be expected to work 5 days a week (Mon-Fri) and will provide cover until 5.00p.m. - 5.30p.m. each day. This is NOT a patient facing role.

The post-holder will be involved in the reception of samples and accurately entering patient and sample information onto the laboratory IT systems.

The post-holder will be responsible for various laboratory "housekeeping" duties including regular defrosting of laboratory fridges and freezers, cleaning laboratory glassware and cleaning/sterilising laboratory areas.

The post-holder will also be involved in stock control procedures for laboratory consumables.
