Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a 28 bedded ward currently caring for post-operative surgical patients as well as gastro.

We will be opening an 8-12 bedded Level 1 unit in for HPB, colorectal and vascular patients requiring close monitoring. Due to the high acuity of these patients we have increased our establishment of deputy sister posts.

We have a caring and supportive team, dedicated to the continuing delivery of safe and excellent care which is supported by our exceptional patient feedback. We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic and highly motivated to join our ward leadershipteam.

The role of the Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse on E14 is to support the team.

You will co-ordinate the ward, ensuring that patients are receiving excellent care and continuous communication with doctors, relatives and patients.

As a leader, the deputy is expected to support the nursing team throughout the shift and manage any issues or concerns as they arise.

You will work with the supportive ward leadership team to drive forward positive change on the ward. You will have dedicated management days to complete audits, appraisals, create action plans, and investigate incidences and to develop your leadership skills.

About us

We are very excited to welcome a new Band 6 into our established team.

We care for Colorectal, HPB , Vascular and Gastro patients. Our surgeons are forward thinking and research active so much of our surgery is pioneering and done minimally invasively. We work closely with a number of specialist teams including; Nurse Specialists, Stoma Specialist Nurses, Acute Pain Team, Dieticians, Physiotherapists and the Critical Care Outreach Team.

We are planning to open 8-12 Level 1 beds in the coming months in order to maintain services for our patients. This has enabled us to expand our Deputy Sister/ Charge nurse team.

We have a supportive and skilled team of nurses and are looking for an aspiring Band 5 or band 6 who are enthusiastic and highly motivated to join our team.

Job responsibilities

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.

In collaboration with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and redesigning the pathway of care.

Improve and maintain standards of essential (basic) nursing care by working with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and using tools such as clinical benchmarking.

Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trusts requirements to improve practice.

During regular clinical sessions, act as a role model and teacher, working alongside other staff including visiting all patients in the ward in the absence of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.

Act as the deputy to the ward sister/charge nurse regularly taking charge of the ward and ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered, are maintained at a high standard.

Be an effective leader and role model and will be expected to provide regular direct clinical care and use experience to support the implementation of both clinical and non-clinical governance.

Work flexibly as a member of the ward team and in support of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improve.
