The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) gives a commitment that all people admitted to hospital that smoke will be offered NHS-funded tobacco treatment services. Women who smoke in pregnancy have been identified as one of the NHS LTPs priority groups. The NHS LTP aim is that all service users in its priority groups will be offered NHS funded tobacco treatment services.
The implementation of the Maternity Stop Smoking Advisor role ensures that all maternity service users who are admitted to maternity wards, attending outpatient clinics, and accessing treatment in community maternity health services will be screened for their smoking status and smokers will be offered NRT. Service users will be referred for an opt out discussion with a Tobacco Dependency Treatment Advisor, who will offer specialist motivational and behavioural support, the development of a personalised plan, and facilitate access to appropriate pharmacotherapy. Tobacco Dependency Treatment Advisors will promote the Smoke Free policy to service users and staff across inpatient, outpatient and community midwifery services, supporting service users to successfully stop smoking, whilst acting as a Smoke Free Champion.
Main duties of the job
Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support sessions. This includes advice on stop smoking medications to pregnant women, partners & family members. Ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality behavioural support and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
Contribute to the development of individual Tobacco Dependence care plans, including the robust completion of appropriate documentation.
Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering healthy lifestyle advice and support.
The post holder will support the development and the day-to-day running of the Maternity Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service. This will ensure safe, well organised and evidence-based care is offered routinely to all smokers who access the service.
Ensure robust discharge planning for the patients ongoing tobacco dependency treatment for patients wishing to stop smoking.
To understand the range of interventions available, the evidence base and potential outcomes for patients and apply appropriately either in group or individual settings.
To regularly review progress, evaluate and report on outcomes to qualified professionals and/or other members of the MDT
Support promotion of wellbeing events including National health Campaigns around Stoptober, National No Smoking Day etc
