Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join and expand further our dynamic and well-respected acute medicine team here at Barnsley Hospital. The post is available at Specialty Doctor or StR 3+ level who have an interest in Acute Medicine.

This is a substantive post to support management of patients within the Acute Medical Unit. The postholder will be supervised by a named Consultant with adequate administration time allocated. The role includes assisting the Consultant on the ward rounds, acute follow up and ambulatory clinics. The appointed Doctor will have the opportunity to show personal initiative in the running of services for assessment of ambulatory care patients.

The postholder will be supervised by an acute or on call Consultant Physician and will be encouraged to participate in the postgraduate education programme, audit and research and will also be allowed time and funding for study leave according to the Trust policy. Continuing Professional Development is encouraged for Specialty Doctors.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be involved in the care of new patient arrivals to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). Review patients on the Short Stay Unit (SSU) and see new patients referred from ED or GP in Medical SDEC.

Help the acute/general medical take and support the on-call Registrar.

Seek senior advice where needed and supervise the FY1/2 & CTs.

Be involved in writing discharge summaries and communicating with GPs on any follow up investigations (admin time provided).

To provide, with consultant colleagues, an effective emergency medicine service to the people of Barnsley; to work closely with the emergency medicine team to provide a high-quality service.

To advise clinical colleagues on matters within your sphere of expertise;

To liaise with other health care organisations, social services, general practitioners, voluntary organisations etc;

To liaise with the other medical clusters regarding treatment protocols for all specialties, including those based in the community;

To competently perform procedures, teach and supervise junior team members to do procedures.
