Job summary
Biochemistry at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is part of the Blood Sciences department of Barnsley and Rotherham Integrated Laboratory Services. This modern department currently offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Rotherham and Barnsley Hospitals as well as local GP practices. The Barnsley Pathology Laboratories are also part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw collaboration committed to following NHS Improvement guidelines to develop a region wide based Pathology Service. The department is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
The Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
Main duties of the job
The primary role of a Biochemical Scientist is the efficient diagnostic analysis of bodily fluids with the rapid feedback of any abnormal results to aid patient care. The Biomedical Scientist will be able to prepare, maintain and quality control complex analytical equipment. The Biomedical Scientist will be able to analyse results produced and provide rapid feedback to health care professionals, alerting them to any abnormal results. A fully competent Biomedical Scientist will be able to work single handed and assume full responsibility for the laboratory. The successful candidate must be committed to supporting a 24/7 service.
For the band 6 position the successful candidate will be state registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, have several years experience working in a Biochemistry laboratory in an NHS hospital including working on a 24/7 roster. They must hold the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry or be able to demonstrate equivalence e.g. currently working at a band 6 position
If applying for the band 5 position the successful candidate will be state registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, have experience working in a Biochemistry laboratory in an NHS hospital with the expectation that they will either apply or be working towards the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry. On successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry the candidate will be eligible to automatically uplift to a band 6 position.
