We are seeking to recruit to the position of Biomedical Assistant to work within a busy Blood Sciences department. Applicants are sought from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with experience working in a Heath Care Environment who are keen to extend / increase their knowledge and skills as an integral part of the Blood Sciences team.

A degree of physical effort is required and potential applicants must be able to multi-task and work well under pressure.

You must be able to work flexibly as the post includes a roster commitment to work some late shifts.

This laboratory forms part of an integrated pathology service for both Rotherham and Barnsley hospitals, serving a combined population of approx. 500,000. It provides a district wide service to both acute hospitals and the Primary Care Trusts. The department is fully automated and receives approximately 6,000 tubes/day.

Main duties of the job

As a Biomedical Assistant you will be responsible of the accurate and safe registration of all sample requests received for analysis within the Blood Sciences and Blood Transfusion Laboratories.

You will be responsible for the receipt and initial processes for urgent requests into the laboratory, ensuring that these samples are processed in a timely manner.

The role also may include the analysis of samples using manual and automated laboratory techniques.

Biomedical Assistants are also responsible for the receipt and redistribution of samples that require analysis at other laboratories, following national guidelines for the packaging of dangerous goods.

Applicants should have an interest in science, be self-confident and motivated, have good communication skills and pay attention to detail. Ideally, they will have experience of working shifts in a Blood Sciences Laboratory.
