Biochemistry at Barnsley Hospital is part of the Blood Sciences department of Barnsley & Rotherham Integrated Laboratory Services. This modern department currently offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Rotherham & Barnsley Hospitals as well as local GP practices. The department is fully UKAS accredited & an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
The Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients & clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job & career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
Main duties of the job
Interview Date is the 13th October 2023.
We are a fully automated laboratory with an Inpeco Aptio track linking to state of the art Siemens Atellica analysers. In addition, there is a Gem 5000 for Blood Gas analysis, Tosoh G11s for HbA1c analysis and Advanced Micro-Osmometer for Osmolality measurement. We also provide support for the Trust Point of Care Roche Inform glucose meters, Siemens Clinitek Status urine analysis analysers and Werfen Gem 5000 blood gas analysers.
Applying for the trainee position the successful candidate will have, or they are working towards the completion of, an IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree or IBMS approved equivalent qualifications. Candidates with, or are working towards, the completion of the HCPC registration portfolio would be preferred but not this is not essential. Experience of working in an NHS Biochemistry laboratory would also be preferred.
Once state registered and trained to the band 5 position the successful candidate will be committed to supporting a 24/7 service.
Post state registration training is encouraged and once the IBMS Specialist Portfolio for Biochemistry has been completed and passed the candidate is eligible for automatic progression to Specialist BMS Band 6
