Job summary
A fixed term or secondment opportunity has arisen in the Microbiology department at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist with I.T. responsibility within the Microbiology Team.
The post holder must demonstrate specialist knowledge and will be responsible for the management and execution of the day-to-day work of sections of the laboratory, in order to ensure a quality, continuous, unbroken clinical diagnostic and therapeutic service. In addition, the post holder will be the departments I.T. specialist for the Laboratory Information Management System.
The Barnsley Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology network. The aim of the network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the Operational manager, whose duties span the bacteriology sections of the Microbiology laboratory. The post holder must demonstrate specialist knowledge in one or more of these key laboratory sections. They will be responsible for the management and execution of the day-to-day work of sections of the laboratory, in order to ensure a quality, continuous, unbroken clinical diagnostic and therapeutic service to patients from Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Primary Care Trust. In addition, the post holder will be the departments IT specialist for the Laboratory Information Management System.
The post holder will participate in the provision of a comprehensive 24/7 acute service and as such will be required to work single-handed as the duty BMS on-call.
The post holder will maintain State Registration through the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC) and have an influential role in developing the service to meet the needs of the Clinicians and other Healthcare workers.
