Job summary

This 1-year secondment is an ideal opportunity for an experienced BMS to gain leadership & managerial experience.

Haematology at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is part of the Blood Sciences department of Barnsley & Rotherham Integrated Laboratory Services. This modern department offers a wide range of diagnostic testing for Rotherham & Barnsley Hospitals as well as local GP practices within the ICB. The department is fully UKAS accredited & an IBMS accredited training laboratory.

The Barnsley NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients & clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research & development in collaboration with Academia & Industry to improve health & wealth in the region & provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff. Transformation Programme may include the consolidation of some services. Staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.

The Pathology staff will also be participating in a staff consultation to change working patterns, therefore, shifts may change from those described in the advert.

Main duties of the job

Have excellent communication skills. Display attitudes and behaviours in line with Trust values & behaviours and ensure that the patient is at the heart of the work within the department.

Support BMS staff with analytical & process technical issues.

Be able to effectively escalate issues to companies/manufacturers for resolution.

Manage staffing duties, including 1:1s & mentoring trainee staff to complete their registration & Specialist portfolios.

Regularly liaise with the Lead BMS and be expected to efficiently communicate/escalate issues to ensure that KPIs are met and matters within the laboratory are effectively managed.

Liaise with Biochemistry peers in the department to effectively manage sample processing and demonstrate a Blood Science ethos.

Attend discipline-specific meetings.

Manage your own workload and quality processes to ensure the laboratory meets KPIs and maintains UKAS accreditation
