Job summary

An opportunity has arisen in the Microbiology department at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for a Band 2 Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Microbiology Team.

The post holder will act as a Medical Laboratory Assistant and as such will gain the knowledge and experience required to become an integral member of the Microbiology team. The successful candidate will provide pre and post analytical support to the Biomedical Assistants and Biomedical Scientists across the bacteriology and virology laboratories.

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The programme will consolidate laboratory services across the region, which will include the consultation of all staff affected. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with academia and industry to improve health and wealth in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Microbiology is one of the four major departments that make up the Pathology directorate and as such has a major role in the delivery of healthcare within the Barnsley Health Community.

Microbiology underpins the acute services within the Trust and provides 24/7 unbroken support for emergency medicine. The department has a vital role in the delivery of all the National Service Frameworks and Integrated Care Pathways and provides a service to all the medical and surgical specialties for BDGH NHS Foundation Trust and General Practice and Community Hospitals in the Barnsley Primary Care Trust.

The post holder will provide pre-analytical and post-analytical support and acquire specialist skills and knowledge through their training program.

The post holder will be expected to work 2pm-8pm Monday-Friday. They will be primarily based in the reception section of Microbiology and assist the Biomedical Scientists in ensuring the execution of the day-to-day work of the department. This will include the safe receipt, sorting and labelling of a range of patient specimens. The use and operation of a Laboratory Information Management System for booking in and data entry of microbiology requests and reports. The post holder will also be responsible for answering telephone calls and providing any further assistance to the BMA/and BMS during the extended day service of laboratory.
