Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Pathology Central Reception Service for a permanent Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our well-established friendly team. The MLA Team provide essential administrative and organisational support to the Blood Sciences Laboratory helping to ensure it delivers the best care to our patients.

The Blood Sciences Department provides a 24/7 service and the successful candidate will be required to work all shifts to enable this including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

The successful candidate must be computer literate, well organised and able to communicate easily both with colleagues and patients alike. It is essential that the post holder can work effectively in a team environment but also confidently using their own initiative.

The work is interesting and varied and there is an emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail

Main duties of the job

Sample receipt, verification, sorting and distribution to the departments ensuring that sample deliveries from GP surgeries are complete and the requests received contain the minimum dataset for accurate registration.

Prioritisation of workload to ensure that urgent or time sensitive requests are dealt with immediately.

Meticulous and accurate data input of patient demographics, clinical details and the tests required using the Winpath Enterprise System.

Bar code label the samples ensuring that the correct sample has been provided and that the request card, bar code and sample are the same.

Scan all request cards into the document scanning system and file cards.

The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.

A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them
