Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled radiologist with a subspecialty interest in Upper Gastrointestinal (Upper GI) imaging to join our dynamic team.

The Upper GI subspecialty of the Radiology Department at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and staging of a wide range of upper gastrointestinal conditions, particularly oesophageal and gastric cancers. This service is integral to early detection, treatment planning, and post-treatment surveillance, ensuring optimal patient outcomes in a high-volume clinical environment.

The Upper GI imaging service comprises a team of experienced radiologists and radiographers, delivering a full suite of diagnostic modalities. The department also works closely with the Trust's upper GI surgical, gastroenterology, pathology and oncology teams, forming a key part of our multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to patient management.

BHRUT is a recognised regional centre for Upper GI cancer surgery and home to the Digestive Diseases Centre, which integrates gastroenterology, advanced endoscopy, and surgical services. The Trust performs over 18,000 GI endoscopy procedures annually, supporting diagnostic and therapeutic services. Radiology plays a central role in staging, surveillance, and emergency imaging, with active participation in weekly Upper GI MDTs, contributing to the Trust's multidisciplinary approach to complex GI care

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to attend and contribute to weekly Upper GI MDT meetings, ensuring collaborative decision-making and optimal patient care. This position will be part of a 1:4 MDT rota, ensuring an equitable distribution of workload while maintaining high service standards. Applicants should have prior experience in Upper GI imaging, possess strong interpretative and reporting skills, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development. Apart from cross-sectional imaging, the candidate is expected to supervise and perform barium/contrast procedures. Teaching and supervising radiology trainees and junior radiologists is part of the role.

There is on-call service for general radiology and is consultant led, and the on-call consultant is expected to report urgent AE and inpatient CT scans from 17:00 to 20:00 and 8:00 to 9:00 on weekdays and 8:00 to 18:00 on weekends.
