Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced nurse to join the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT). This is an exciting opportunity as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to be an integral part of the cancer and clinical support division. The post holder is expected use independent judgement to assess, investigate, provisionally diagnose, implement and evaluate the clinical care of oncology patients. Following a clinical review, you would be expected to work with patients and treating medics to optimise symptom control and manage any adverse effects from their oncological treatment. There is the opportunity to assess patients via the emergency triage line, face to face in the acute oncology day unit beds and through inpatient visits on the wards and Emergency Department at both hospital sites.As an Acute Oncology CNS you will play a key role in delivering high quality care to our cancer patients in line with NICE guidance, working as a core member of the Multidisciplinary team. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Acute Oncology plays a pivotal role in the delivery of expert care to patients presenting with acute complications of cancer or cancer treatment therefore experience and knowledge in Oncology is essential to help improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital admissions.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an integral member of the Division, with clinical responsibilities and specialist knowledge to lead and coordinate the management of complications and oncological emergencies related to cancer and/or its treatment.
The post holder will play a key role within the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) team, working alongside colleagues in oncology and the wider MDT. They will provide specialist nursing care and expert clinical advice to patients with suspected or confirmed cancer presenting acutely unwell. This will include performing advanced assessment, history taking, physical examination and clinical decision making to support timely diagnosis and intervention in line with NICE guidance for acute oncology.
