Consultant Histopathologist

Information:

Job summary

Applications are invited for a full time (1.0 WTE) substantive consultant post in Histopathology and Cytopathology. This is one of four new posts that have been created following recent Trust investment aimed at significantly expanding its histopathology workforce. The successful candidate will be joining a team that is currently made up of 11 Consultant Histopathologists (11.5 WTE) and due to reach 15 (16.5 WTE) with this investment.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will need to provide evidence of working at consultant level in Breast pathology, Urological pathology and non-gynae cytology in recent times. Contribution to reporting non-cancer routine endoscopic GI biopsies will also be expected. Evidence of satisfactory participation in relevant EQA schemes will be required (or a willingness to do so). The successful candidate should expect to be deputy MDT lead pathologist for any one or more of Breast and Urology cancer MDT. Whilst at work in the department, each consultant histopathologist has sole use of a well-appointed office equipped with microscope and up to date IT facilities including the use of digital dictation with an option of speech recognition (TalkingPoint). The department is encouraging remote working and candidates who have a desire to do so for part of the week are particularly welcome to apply. Progress is being made (as part of a North-East London regional project) with introduction of digital pathology. All the cut-up is done under consultant supervision by a team of 5 (5WTE) specialty doctors and 1 Pathologists' Assistant. We have a fantastic laboratory with excellent immunohistochemistry facilities. The laboratory is well integrated with the Genomic Laboratory Hub for North London. However, a significant proportion of routine (NICE recommended) molecular testing such as EGFR, PD-L1, KRAS, NRAS and Her2 - ISH testing is done in-house (salvage pathway).

About us

We're an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we're no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We're looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It'll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
