Job summary

This post is designed to support undergraduate medical trainees, who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. The post is based at BHRUT, that is aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research.

The post holder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee their development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customized programme of training and educational experience will be designed around the needs of the individual.

Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally.

Participants will be encouraged to develop a sustained commitment to education within their clinical career and to consider taking a postgraduate qualification in medical education. It is expected that the Fellow will attend Health Education England's range of faculty development courses, contributing as an attendee, participant observer, teacher, or co-facilitator (depending on experience and expertise and constraints of each individual course).

Main duties of the job

Your role will encompass a diverse array of responsibilities aimed at enriching the learning experiences of our medical students and upholding the highest standards of educational quality. You'll directly engage with students, providing mentorship and guidance through tutorials, and clinical rotations. Additionally, you'll conduct departmental inductions, ensuring new students are equipped with the knowledge and support needed to thrive. Your active participation in audit activities will drive continuous improvement, while your leadership in clinical skills training and simulation sessions will prepare students for the challenges of real-world healthcare. As the educational landscape evolves, so too will your role, offering opportunities for growth and development. If you're passionate about shaping the future of medical education and ready to make a meaningful impact, we invite you to embark on this journey with us.

About us

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive forour teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
