Job summary
An experienced optometrist is required to join the ophthalmology service at BHRUT as part of a busy multidisciplinary team consisting of 11 consultant ophthalmologists, 5 orthoptists, 5 optometrists, 4 ophthalmic technicians, and nursing team support.

Prior hospital experience is desirable, but we welcome applicants with community optometry experience who are enthusiastic and willing to gain hospital experience.The postholder can work in an 'extended role' within other ophthalmology subspecialties, which can include cornea, cataract, medical retina, neuro-ophthalmology, or eye casualty.
The postholder ideally will provide support in the assessment and management of patients attending the contact lens clinics. The role also includes a session providing specialist shared care assessment and management of paediatric patients working alongside orthoptists, providing paediatric cyclorefraction. At least two years post graduate experience is required with a special interest in general ophthalmology and complex contact lens fittings for irregular corneas. They should be motivated to proactively maintain their own continuing professional development in addition to being involved in developing others as part of the departmental undergraduate / postgraduate teaching within the eye service.
Main duties of the job
As an autonomous practitioner, the postholder will provide specialist optometry support as part of a busy multidisciplinary ophthalmology team.
This will include delivery of high quality optometry practice to both paediatric and adult patients, some with complex conditions. This includes provision of single handed specialist high quality assessment and management of patients as part of the paediatric ophthalmology sub-speciality.
They will also take part in the hospital eye service contact lens clinics, providing and teaching patients to use specific contact lenses for complex conditions, e.g. keratoconus.
In addition, depending on experience, the post holder will provide a shared care extended role within other ophthalmology subspecialties, e.g., corneal, cataract, medical retina, neuro-ophthalmology, eye casualty.
The postholder will also participate in undergraduate / postgraduate teaching being provided by the ophthalmology team
