Job summary
BHRUT SLT Team are looking for a Highly Specialist (band 7) Acute SLT to lead our busy acute services across both of our sites (Queen's Hospital/King George Hospital).This exciting role covers a variety of specialities incl. Geriatrics, Respiratory, Cardiology, A&E and admissions units, Gastroenterology, Surgery, Trauma and orthopaedics, Endocrine, and Nephrology.The post holder should have extensive experience managing acquired swallowing and communication difficulties within an acute setting. VFSS competencies and basic trache competencies are essential and FEES competencies desirable however we can provide in house training. Your role will involve lots of teaching within the SLT Team and wider MDTs. You will also be regularly involved in our 5 VFSS and FEES clinics per week.We're looking for a motivated and highly organised individual to lead on day to day management of the acute service incl. supervision of junior staff, and supporting complex decisions relating to swallowing and communication difficulties. A keen interest in palliative care is desirable due to the specialities covered.Our SLT Team is ever growing and very supportive. We provide ample CPD, training opportunities and peer support. Main duties of the job
To take responsibility for and demonstrate highly specialist skills in the holistic assessment, diagnosis and management of adults with acquired swallowing and communication difficulties across a broad range of specialities and working alongside multiple MDTs. This may include some non-vented tracheostomy patients.
To be able to make a differential diagnosis in complex cases on the basis of evidence.
To actively participate in the development of service provision.
To actively participate in the delivery, teaching and on-going development of Videofluoroscopy and FEES clinics including supporting junior members of staff to achieve competencies in this specialist area.
To document accurate speech therapy entries in the medical notes and written reports which reflects highly specialist knowledge, including reporting on objective assessment e.g. Videofluoroscopy.
To autonomously hold responsibility for your own caseload and to assist and monitor the caseload of your wider acute team, across sites.
To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients and their caregivers, their families and other professionals. To promote understanding of the aims of treatment and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care

We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
We're pleased to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be accredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen's and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
