Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full- time band 7 nurse injector/ practitioner within the ophthalmology department (eye clinic) in our Trust. We are seeking an enthusiastic nurse with a 'can do' attitude to join our nursing team. The post holder will be based at Queens hospital in Romford but may be required to cover other ophthalmic clinic sessions at any of our outreach clinics . We are looking for an innovative, enthusiastic nurse that is passionate about ophthalmology and willing to support its growth. The successful applicant would be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in the department to achieve high standards of care. Our busy department includes - Eye Casualty, Pre-operative assessment , AMD, glaucoma and other ophthalmic sub-specialties services and clinics and you would be expected to rotate throughout each area within the department. Knowledge of ophthalmic Pre-operative assessment, OCT, Biometry, Eye casualty and general ophthalmology is vital for this post. We rely on good team work, excellent communication and interpersonal skills for excellent care. We treat patients at our main hospital site in Romford and at other locations within the community to enable us to provide expert treatment closer to patients' homes.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will work as an autonomous ophthalmic practitioner undertaking holistic assessment, examination and diagnosis in order to implement management plans for patients accessing the medical retinal service
- The post holder will manage a caseload and client group within their area of expertise
- To work autonomously using expert clinical skills in medical retina to provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge of patients within medical retina intravitreal services and related sub-specialty in ophthalmology.
- Use specialist knowledge and skills to independently provide care to patients attending the ophthalmic outpatients and medical retina services.
- Be accountable for a total episode of care of the patient including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge, referral within medical retina/AMD and related sub-specialty.
- Work alongside consultants, lead nurse and senior sisters to promote the development of ophthalmology services.
- The post holder will deliver a nurse-led intravitreal injection service and follow up clinics for patients, monitoring treatment results under agreed protocols and national guidelines.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive forour teams to innovate and change.
We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
