Job summary

The General Surgical Department at our Trust has made great strides in progressing to a gold standard centre for Education and Training. This is for Foundation, Core and Higher Surgical Trainees. The department in conjunction with Medical Education have instituted a Transformation Plan which has benefited FY trainees. The Trust has been chosen by Health Education England (HEE) and Royal College of Surgeons to be a Pilot site in London for Improving Surgical Training (IST) from 2018 which leads to exciting opportunities for the successful candidate.

The candidates will potentially have the opportunity to rotate across General Surgery/Emergency, Breast, Colorectal and Vascular specialty based at both King George Hospital and Queens Hospital under supervision of Consultants. It offers an excellent opportunity to consolidate and build on existing clinical skills in general surgery.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the applicant include managing and treating the general and vascular surgical admissions under consultant supervision, leading and supporting other junior doctors. They will also participate in the general and vascular surgery on-call rota. You will report to your responsible consultant and will be expected to work as a part of a team and provide support to the junior members of your team. We will support the appointee in their career progression.

The post offers an excellent opportunity to consolidate and build on existing operative and clinical skills in General and emergency surgery and the ideal candidate will be able to undertake research and develop their leadership skills with support of the surgical team.

They will have opportunity to get involved in quality improvement projects. We will support the appointee in their career progression.

They will also support highly acclaimed novel surgical hot clinics which help provide ambulatory care surgical services and supporting elective work (such as Operating theatre and Clinics) in general surgery. You will report to your responsible consultant and will be expected to work as a part of a team and provide support to the junior members of your team. You may be required to take part in the Middle Grade on call rota along with the other surgical registrars.

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive forour teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
