Job summary
An ophthalmic technician is required to join the eye service at BHRUT. The eye service is provided at Queen's Hospital, Romford (main site) as well as other sites within the Trust including King George Hospital, Goodmayes, Ilford. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary eye team consisting of 11 consultant ophthalmologists, 4 orthoptists, 3 optometrists, 4 ophthalmic technicians as well as nurses and health care assistants. The main responsibilities are to provide computerised visual field assessment using Humphrey field analysers, and laser scanning ophthalmoscopy (optical coherence tomography) and visual acuity assessment for ophthalmology clinics, as well as other specialties, e.g. neurology. Applicants should have 6 -12 months experience working as an ophthalmic technician with NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualifications (candidates with other relevant scientific or nursing backgrounds could be considered and training could be provided). Applicants should possess excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. They should also possess the ability to work under pressure, as part of a team and independently, as required as well as being be adaptable, reliable and punctual. Motivation to proactively maintain their own continuing professional development is encouraged in addition to the departmental teaching / development opportunities available.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will contribute to the provision of a technical service across the ophthalmology sub-specialties within a modern NHS eye service including assessment of visual acuity (Thompson 2000), automated visual field assessment (automated and manual) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
