Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a locum consultant (specialising in hand, wrist and shoulder surgery) to join our Trauma & Orthopaedics team, based at Queens Hospital and King George Hospital for a one-year fixed term contract.
The Trauma service is delivered from Queens Hospital and has access to 40 beds. All elective activity is delivered at King George Hospital, with an in-patient capacity of 18 beds on a dedicated ward. The Department offers Orthopaedic Elective clinics at Queens Hospital and Harold Wood polyclinic. There is a dedicated staff transport system operating between our two main sites which runs every 30 minutes. The medical workforce consists of 14.8 WTE Consultants, 14 Associate Specialists/Specialty Doctors, 14 Registrars (eight Deanery Trainees), two Core Trainees and 14 Clinical Fellows/SHOs. The service has a dedicated Plaster Technician team which provides support to both hospital sites. There is a community nursing team, Community Orthopaedic Project in Essex (COPE); this is an initiative which facilitates early discharge from the Elective pathway.
The post holder will support the delivery of the National Health Service Plan, will be expected to attend clinical meetings and take part in continual medical activities in line with Royal College guidelines and will have the opportunity to work in a large and developing department with enthusiastic colleagues.
Main duties of the job
This role will support both elective clinics and theatres in upper limb services as well as joining the consultant on-call rota. The post holder will also be supporting our trauma service, face-to-face fracture clinics and virtual fracture clinic.
The role will have a continuing responsibility for the clinical care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the T&O department, focusing on the operative and non-operative management of elective and non-elective patients during their inpatient stay, operating theatre, as well as in the outpatient department.
The postholder will need to undertake the administrative duties (including referral triaging, ERS Advice & Guidance, PIFU pathway management, PTL and theatre list management) associated with the care of patients and the running of a clinical department. To also work closely with the Orthopaedics Clinical Lead and Consultant team to deliver the 18 week wait RTT pathway and high quality patient care in both theatres and outpatient clinics, focussing on our Elective Recovery Programme and responsible for the T&O patient flow in A&E.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
