Job summary

To assist clinicians and other Health Professionals research, collate, analyse and prepare data from a variety of hospital informations sources for clinical audit, outcomes and service evaluation and generally contribute to the promotion of clinical effectiveness within the Trust.

To support staff in ensuring that clinical audit projects meet criteria set out in Principles for Best Practice in Clinical Audit (NICE, 2002), with audit cycles completed by re-auditing to assess whether improvements in clinical care have been sustained.

Assist Clinical Effectiveness Officers to ensure provision of accurate and timely data to National registries such as; Spine Tango, TARN, ICNARC and NNAP.

Main duties of the job

To provide assistance and support to Operational Services Manager and Clinical Effectiveness Officers with duties relating to clinical audit, outcomes and service evaluations including; NICE and NCEPOD.

Assist Clinical Effectiveness Officers to ensure provision of accurate and timely data to National registries such as; Spine Tango, TARN, ICNARC and NNAP.

Provide support with the management of the clinical audit, outcome and service evaluation databases ensuring they are kept up-to-date and required information submitted.

Undertake, co-ordinate or support data collection, data analysis and presentation of data for specific audit, outcomes and service evaluation projects.

Provide advice and support for all staff throughout the Trust in the development and planning of clinical audit, outcomes and service evaluation projects.

Design data collection tools ensuring standards / guidelines are measured appropriately.

Plan data collection to ensure project deadlines are met. Set up spread sheets and / or databases and input data for approved audit projects ensuring accuracy and completeness of data.

To assist healthcare professionals in the preparation of reports and to ensure their presentation within required timescale and to assist in the summarising of these reports and action taken as required by audit, outcomes and service evaluations.

This will include; meeting coordination, preparation of patient data and outcome information for / from meetings, ensuring adequate representation of medical groups and escalation of information when necessary to assist clinicians to ensure patient pathways are followed.

Attend, and take formal minutes at relevant groups and meetings as required and act as a deputy for the Clinical Effectiveness Officer as needed.

Organisation and preparation of the Clinical Audit Group meetings, including provision of all required documentation.

Analytical & Judgemental Skills

To undertake complex analysis and extraction of measurable criteria from local and national standards and guidance to measure practice against, consider information requirements and develop data collection tools and databases.

Liaise with healthcare professionals to make judgements regarding the appropriate methodology to audit practice. Clinical audits are used as supporting evidence for external assessments and reviews; the role requires judgements to be made on all aspects of these clinical audits.

To complete the audit cycle from designing the projects, analysing and interpreting the audit results. Interpret information and make judgements regarding changing practice to improve patient care by analysing data, identifying major groupings and obvious themes, compare practice with standards and identify areas of compliance and non-compliance.

Interrogation of clinical systems and patient records, interpreting complex clinical information to extract required data.

Communication and Relationship Skills

Develop proactive communication with healthcare professionals undertaking clinical audit, outcomes and service evaluation projects to ensure projects are supported appropriately and results and action plans are received to allow effective monitoring of projects by the clinical effectiveness team.

Participate in the process of raising awareness of the function of clinical effectiveness.

Frequent use of interpersonal skills to obtain information and to provide guidance to patients relating to clinical outcomes and service evaluations both via telephone and face to face.
