Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Interventional Neuroradiologist. This is a new post and the successful candidate will work alongside the existing 4 full-time Consultant Interventional Neuroradiologists and a 5th interventional consultant works part time to cover the thrombectomy on-call an. They will be selected on the skills they can bring to the Trust and their ability to integrate into the department.

The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant contract. The successful applicant must have full GMC registration, possess FRCR (or equivalent), have completed specialist training and be entered on the specialist register of the GMC (or have an expected CCT date within six months of the interview). The applicant should have evidence of suitable neuroradiology subspecialty training.

The radiology department is well equipped with an established capital replacement program. Currently there 5 MRI scanners , There are 2 CT scanners, two flat panel biplane angiogram suites, a robotic general X ray room, and C-arm screening room.

The successful candidate will be required to pay for an enhanced disclosure at the cost of £44.

The post holder will be based at The Walton Centre. The post holder will attend as necessary, the relevant Clinical and MDT Meetings.

Main duties of the job

The proposed starting PAs will comprise.

7.5 PAs in total

6 Direct Clinical Care of which 2.75 on average will be interventional sessions. Depending upon experience the appointee may be involved in additional sessions with a more experienced colleague initially.

1.5 Supporting Professional Activities

Direct clinical care activities will include neurointervention both diagnostic and treatment. It also includes attendance of clinical meetings, MDTs, patient administration, clinics and on-call.

Supporting professional activities will include continuing professional development, teaching, audit, research, and preparation for professional annual appraisal. Evidence of the outputs will be expected both for appraisal / re-validation and for the job planning process

The exact contents of the job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate after appointment. The job plan will be subject to annual review and may be altered by negotiation in response to the changing requirements of the neuroradiology service in light of changing demand or retirements.

The Job Plan outline for this post will consist of 7.5 PAs currently over two/ three days, 9 to 5. There is also an on-call commitment which will be 1 in 6 ( 3 session allocated for this). As part of future job planning it is possible that some pas may need to start earlier or finish later if the service requires. Currently the 4 interventionists provide 24/7 thrombectomy and ad hoc weekend cover particularly over Bank Holidays.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Job purpose

This is a new post to support the existing team of 4 fulltime consultant interventional neuroradiologists and an additional parttime 3PA visiting neuroradiologist covering thrombectomy at the Walton Centre

Clinical Duties

The successful applicant will have a commitment to provide Interventional neuroradiology servicing, participating in 24/7 thrombectomy service, acute and elective neuro intervention cases, and outpatient neurovascular clinics. On-call will be covering 24/7 thrombectomy service on a 1: 5 basis with 6th INR covering leaves and absences on a pre agreed rota basis.

Key Relationships

The successful applicant will be expected to work with the other Neuroradiologists to manage the workload of the department. They are expected to collaborate with the Clinical Director for Neuroradiology, for any service developments, and for meeting service performance requirements. The department of Neuroradiology sits within the Neurology Division and the Divisional Director of Neurology has overall responsibility.

The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with Neurosurgical teams and Anaesthetists to provide inpatient and outpatient care for neurovascular patients.

Undergraduate Education

Students from the University of Liverpool are attached to the Walton Centre and Consultants participate in undergraduate teaching.

Research and Development

Clinical research in the department is encouraged and supported. The Walton Centre has its own active Neurological Research Centre to facilitate and support trials and other research activities. There is a Research & Development Manager within the Trust, whose role is to facilitate research, in particular advising on sources of funding.

Audit

It is expected that the consultant will take part in Divisional and multi disciplinary audit activities.

CPD

It is expected that the consultant will take advantage of continuing professional development. All reasonable requests for study leave will be considered by the Divisional Management team and usually agreed and at least partly funded.

Appraisal

Annual appraisals are mandatory for all consultants. They are distinct from the job planning process. The Trusts Medical Director will be the doctors Responsible Officer.

All Consultants will be required to.

  • Ensure compliance with all Trust Risk Management, Research Governance and Infection Control Policies and Procedures and abide by Standards for Better Health
  • Be aware of and comply with their data protection and confidentiality obligations under Law and through Trust policy
  • Comply with the explicit and implied terms of their contract of employment, or other agreement signed to handle Trust information.
  • Undertake appropriate Information Governance mandatory training as set out in the Corporate Induction and Mandatory Training Policy
  • Attend all mandatory training as specified in the Corporate Induction and mandatory Training Policy such as Fire, Infection control, Conflict Resolution and Safeguarding
  • Abide by the relevant Codes of Professional Practice
  • Take responsibility for managing own health and well being.

It should cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice, including clinical work, teaching, audit, research, education and managerial responsibilities. Documentary evidence of productive use of SPAs will be required in the job planning process. There is a guaranteed minimum of 1.5 SPAs; more are attributed at job planning according to additional duties undertaken. This can vary year by year. The job plan will provide a clear schedule of commitments both internal and external. In addition it will contain personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and objectives.

The post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director and through him to the Divisional Clinical Director and ultimately to the Medical Director and will work closely with both the Head of Service and the Divisional Director of Operations.

Teaching

The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital for the University of Liverpool Medical School and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate teaching.
