- Improve theidentification and supportof pregnant women who smoke.
- Enablematernity teamsto deliver more effective, evidence-based smoking cessation interventions.
- Contribute tobetter maternal and neonatal outcomes by reducing smoking-related risks.
Main duties of the job
The Smoking Cessation Midwife will work to address smoking in pregnancy. They will work closely with Maternity Tobacco Dependence Advisors and support the Community Midwifery Teams and members of the Multi-Disciplinary Professional Team to ensure staff follow the smokefree pregnancy pathway and refer pregnant smokers to the in-house stop smoking service
As Smoking Cessation Midwife you will work as part of a team to contribute to the implementation of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle element 1 and support the implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan. The Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle (SBLCB) provides evidence-based best practice for providers and commissioners of maternity care across England, to reduce perinatal mortality. Element 1 focuses onreducing smoking in pregnancyby implementing NHS-funded tobacco dependence treatment services within maternity settings, in line with theNHS Long Term PlanandNICE guidance. This includes carbon monoxide testing and asking women about their smoking status at the antenatal booking appointment and, as appropriate, throughout pregnancy.

To support the continuing development of a safe and efficient Smoking in Pregnancy Service, that meets the requirements as set by local and regional guidance.
To Plan and deliver expert clinical advice and support for women and pregnant people, and their families in a range of settings, primarily in the clients home or hospital.

To use a high level of communication and interpersonal skills in order to empower clients to make behavioural changes in relation to smoking according to individual needs.
To work to support the safe delivery of the Smoking in Pregnancy service including providing access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy and other stop smoking medication and aids, performing a risk vs benefits assessment of clients individual case, monitoring and adjusting medication as appropriate.
Participate in the education and training to support of other HCPs to support delivery of the Smoking in Pregnancy service.
To liaise closely with members of the multidisciplinary team, Midwives, Health Visitors, General Practitioners and other specialities as required.
Participate in audit, data collection and submission as required including SBL.
Assist in the preparation of policies and reports and presentation of information as required.
Maintain a high standard of record keeping and maintenance of all databases related to the Smoking in Pregnancy service.
