Specialist Pelvic Physiotherapist

Job summary

This role is to cover a period of maternity leave within the team.

The post holder will provide the opportunity for an already experienced clinician in pelvic health to develop further in the management of a wide variety of pelvic floor dysfunction in an acute setting. The successful applicant will be fully supported to identify appropriate goals towards continued professional development and working within the multi-disciplinary teams across the organisation promoting the profile of the specialist physiotherapy service.

Main duties of the job

  • To deputise for the Physiotherapy Service Manager and work with the manager /rest of the team, to plan, coordinate, deliver and evaluate the physiotherapy service provided.
  • Be responsible for providing highly specialist and complex assessment and treatment of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction.
  • Supervision, support and education to physiotherapists and physiotherapy undergraduates and other colleagues within the MDT both within the Trust and the community.

Job responsibilities

  • Work as an autonomous practitioner, professionally and legally accountable to the management of patients in your care, ensuring a high standard of clinical care.
  • Highly skilled in verbal and non-verbal communication skills with all groups of patients.
  • Coordinate and ensure effective delivery of obstetric and gynaecological inpatient service, across the Trust within resources, adapting to change and prioritising accordingly.
  • To be able to demonstrate sound clinical reasoning within the assessment and treatment of patient's suffering a wide range of complex pelvic floor dysfunction /pelvic symptoms. Implement goal setting and constant re-evaluation of intervention to achieve optimum outcomes for the patient including comprehensive discharge planning.
  • Formulate individualised specific management and treatment plans employing advanced analytical skills.
  • Utilising advanced treatment skills and options including neuromuscular electrical stimulation, biofeedback.
  • To be responsive and adaptable to perpetual changes in patient's clinical states.
  • To elicit active patient participation and cooperation with treatment often against a background of cognitive/behavioural/perceptual components.
  • To assess mental capacity of the patient, including ability to give informed consent and this be documented whilst working within the legal framework.
  • Ensure coordinated treatment approach, making accurate and timely risk assessments to minimise risks and maximise patient's progress.
  • Provide highly specialist advice to members of the MDT.
  • Work closely with other specialist services e.g urogynae nurse specialists.
  • Effectively communicate with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and ensure understanding of often complex aspects of their condition.
  • identify and justify when a patient does not require physiotherapy intervention, but needs other MDT input.
  • Empower patients to self manage long term conditions through advice, education, coping strategies and therapeutic procedures.
