Role
To support midwives to ensure all women receive optimum care.
To implement a plan of care devised by a midwife, to pregnant women, postnatal women and new born babies, within the hospital setting (the level of responsibility for which will depend on the competence of the individual andthe discretion of the supervising midwife).
Perform a range of delegated patient duties including the recording of patientDetails.
Job Purpose
The scope of the practice of Maternity Support Workers is formally set out by theRoyal College of Midwives in their document The roles and responsibilities ofMSWs RCM Position Statement 2010. They are directly transcribed into this JobDescription.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
To provide support wherever the need is greatest within the community setting,acting autonomously in the delivery of patient care. Support includes:
Care and support of women, babies and their families
Developing positive relationships with families, parents and carers
Supporting new mothers in the care of their new born babies, including the provision of emotional and physical care within the postnatal period.
Supporting individuals during and following clinical/therapeutic activities.
Support individuals who are distressed.
Support professional advice to help parents interact with and take care of theirnewly born baby/babies.
Supporting Breastfeeding mothers and babies.
Providing individual support to vulnerable mothers and families
Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs ofindividuals.
To promote health and wellbeing of mother and baby through parent education and health promotion.
To empower women and their families to make their own decisions abouthealth and choices.
Clinical Responsibilities
To undertake safe phlebotomy practice as requested by the midwife onpregnant and post natal patients.
Work autonomously performing blood sample procedures including Glucose Tolerance Testing.
At the request of the midwife, perform and record physiological measurements within the remit of the MSW role and report accurately to themidwife, the assessment undertaken.
Obtaining samples at the request of a midwife, including wound swabs, eyeswabs, urine specimens, MRSA swabs, stool samples and sputumspecimens.
To perform new born blood spot on babies between day 5 and 7 with informedconsent from the parents.
To weigh new born babies as per guideline and calculate % weight loss.
Discuss all deviations from normal with a Registered Midwife who will adviseon plan for further management.
To undertake flu immunisations on pregnant women during flu vaccination season after relevant training.
Communication
To communicate with relevant professionals in statutory and non-statutoryorganisations, using clear written and verbal means of communication.
To ensure records are legible, accurate, contemporaneous, signed, dated andare maintained in accordance with Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC)guidelines and Trust Policy on Record Keeping.
To communicate with women and their families in a sensitive manner and toliaise with other professionals to meet the womens identified needs.
To utilise effective systems of communication to ensure continuity of careacross the community and hospital setting.
To use interpreters as needed, to enable families with English as a secondlanguage and those with sensory impairment to access the service.
To be able to communicate complex and sensitive information in anunderstandable format to women, their families and other professionals.

To implement and evaluate patient care by following agreed plans, policies,procedures and clinical guidelines including the delivery of specified activitieswhich are agreed for the job role/purpose.
Contribute and participate effectively in team meetings and meetings withother agencies.
Contribute to the team working and planning of care in the childrens centres areas.
Contribute to the development of networks with other organisations.
Contribute to the development new ways of providing services that promoteparental participation and ownership.

To work with parents to promote positive parenting in order to prevent childmaltreatment.
To support the implementation of the child protection plans in collaborationwith other health and social service professionals.
To support the contribution of the skill mix team to child protection practiceTo support vulnerable women and their families through the provision ofappropriate community services.
To share information on a need-to-know basis with all relevant agencies Public Health and Health Promotion.
Contribute to the proactive development, implementation and the monitoring ofpublic health and health promotion activities including own clinical work, work ofteam and empowering the local community in accordance with local andnational plans.
Works with members of the team to reducing health inequalities, addressing particular needs of communities, who are likely to achieve poor outcomes.
Contribute to the provision of up-to-date information, education and supportfor parents as in the provision of parenting classes in partnership with otherprofessionals
Contribute to the development of strategies with key agencies and parents todeliver the health promotion advice e.g. smoking cessation, post nataldepression etc.
Liaises with other agencies for the provision of client care.
Ensures services provided are based on clear evidence to meet identifiedneeds.
Contribute to the development of a notification and referral system so that allfamilies are signposted to appropriate services.
Contribute to the establishment of systems for review of progress in meetingtargets and objectives.
Contribute to the provision of reports as requested by the Community Coordinator and the Community Matron Working Collaboratively.
Supports the leadership and development of the midwifery teams so that theyare able to function effectively.
Ensures effective communication systems in place to support communitydevelopment initiatives.
Participates in collaborative activity with other partners and agencies toimprove and develop service delivery using an evaluative tool.

To undertake procedures as directed by a midwife after successfully.
completing an Accredited NVQ 3 (or equivalent) programme in Maternity Care.
Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development ofothers including supporting future MSWs in training.
To assume responsibility for and make arrangements to participate in on-sitetraining programmes and ensure compliance with the training requirements ofthe Trust and Maternity Department.
To ensure annual appraisal undertaken with reference to Trust objectives and the Nursing & Midwifery Strategy.
To undertake Flu immunisation training.
