Job summary
The role is to provide clear and effective leadership within the peri-operative environment to enable nursing/theatre teams to develop both professionally and clinically.
The post holder will deputise as required in the absence of the Theatre Matron or when the Theatre Matron is unavailable.
The post holder will provide clear direction to ensure the optimum quality care is provided for all patients within resources available. The post holder will participate in the regular rota of co-ordinating the daily activities of the theatre department.
The post holder has a responsibility for the provision of clinical expertise, by undertaking weekly clinical days to maintain skills, and will act as a resource for other theatre staff and as a role model for the theatre teams.
To have overall accountability and responsibility for the clinical area and to manage relevant staff, financial material, governance and quality agendas and information resources in partnership with appropriate personnel.
Responsibility for ensuring a high standard of training and support is provided for all staff within the department.
To organise and prioritise care in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, delivering a high level of care in all areas of peri-operative setting, anaesthetics, scrub, recovery or circulating roles.
To undertake/supervise specific projects/audits related to the professional development of nursing and peri-operative care.
Main duties of the job
Provide operational and strategic direction for the clinical areas by being involved in the decision making process and giving information to assist service development.
The post holder will deputise as required in the absence of the Theatre Matron or when the Theatre Matron is unavailable.
To be wholly accountable for the management of the clinical area, whilst guided by Trust policies and guidelines. To ensure all staff work within the boundaries of clinical governance and clinical risk, investigating clinical incidents as necessary.
Work within the Trust risk management and governance guidelines, reporting and investigating adverse events in speciality area, develop and implement plans for remedial action. Promoting a culture of openness and transparency which reflects a just and fair approach.
Managing informal complaints - promoting local resolution and responding to formal complaints.
Be responsible for recruitment and selection of staff in accordance with Trust policy.
To roster and deploy staff effectively and flexibly. Ensuring the staff skill mix meets the needs of patients in the Theatre unit within the resources available.
Establish clear support mechanisms for grade and career progression.
Demonstrate people management skills, delegation, negotiation and assertiveness as appropriate. To perform sickness return's, appraisals, disciplinaries and grievance under the guidance of Human Resources.
