Job summary

This fixed-term post presents a unique and exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified individual to become involved in the new Haemato-oncology service created by the integration of haemato-oncology services from the Royal Liverpool Hospital and Aintree University Hospitals (now LUHFT) with Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The post includes the following key remits:

  • To contribute to the delivery of haemato-oncology (with focus on myeloma and myeloid), stem cell & cellular therapy services in CCCL and outpatient and consultative haemato-oncology at Aintree site of LUHFT.
  • To contribute, and lead on clinical trials and research.
  • To contribute to a high-quality, sustainable, integrated haemato-oncology and myeloid/myeloma service for North Mersey.

This Consultant post offers opportunities for career development and involvement in teaching, research, and innovation in the areas of myeloid disorders, BMT and cellular therapy. This post will be based mainly on the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre site with sessions in the Aintree hospital site and on-call work at CCCL. The notional job plan includes a total of 10 programmed activities (8 DCC, 2 SPA) and 0.5 PA for predictable on call.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties will include outpatient and inpatient clinical work (myeloid, myeloma and stem cell transplantation) in CCC-L. It includes in reach and consultative work for Aintree site LUHFT one day a week and participation in a shared on-call commitment covering CCCL. Formal laboratory sessions may be included depending on applicant interest.

The post holders will participate in the Consultant Haemato-oncology on-call rota, which is based at the CCCL with SpR operating a first on call system. This will be an approximately 1 in 10 on-call commitment.

The Haemato-oncology unit is based in the brand new, state-of-the-art CCC-L building alongside the region's solid tumour non-surgical oncology services. Further details are provided in the accompanying document.

  • To provide advice to clinicians at local and regional level. The appointee will establish effective channels of communication with referring clinicians throughout the region and link in with all relevant MDTs.
  • To contribute to the development of a high-quality, sustainable, integrated myloid and SCT service for North Mersey. The appointee will be expected to play a leading role in planning and delivering the reconfiguration of Haematology services at Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Ormskirk District General Hospital. He/she will optimise the quality and efficiency of these key clinical services and ensure that relevant new developments are promptly implemented where appropriate
  • To contribute to the further development of the regional SCT programme by establishing robust, sustainable networking arrangements with referring centres. The appointee will be expected to actively engage with clinicians across the region to optimise pathways of communication, enhance engagement with MDTs and streamline referrals for SCT/cellular therapy.
  • To contribute to the leadership, management, development and delivery of the overall CCC Haemato-oncology service. The appointee will be expected to engage in discussions and initiatives that extend beyond his/her own area of specialist interest.
  • To contribute to the regions Haemato-oncology research programme. The appointee will be expected to participiate in clinical trials and engage more broadly with the Directorates wider research agenda.
  • To contribute to the educational programmes for trainees. The appointee will be expected to inspire and educate junior doctors through a combination of formal and informal teaching and support Haematology Specialty Registrars preparing for the Part I and Part II of the FRCPath examination.
  • To contribute to medical undergraduate teaching. The appointee will be expected to contribute to medical student placements at CCC. There may also be an opportunity to take on a teaching leadership role with the University of Liverpool Medical School.
  • To secure approval from the CCC Drugs and Therapeutics Committee for relevant new drugs.
  • To support supervision of junior doctors including appraisal and assessment.
  • To participate in the Trusts annual appraisal and job planning processes.
  • To contribute to clinical governance. The Trust is committed to the development of Clinical Governance. Each member of medical staff is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities within their Directorate, and each Directorate has a Consultant nominated as Clinical Governance lead. The activities include (but are not restricted to) audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence Based Practice.
  • To contribute to administrative activities within the Directorate. All consultants represent the Directorate on various committees within the Trust as well as taking responsibility for particular delegated areas according to their interests and availability. The Clinical Director is responsible for delegating these responsibilities and the post-holder should expect to be tasked with a formal administrative role.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

The new post holder will be provided with office space and access to home working where appropriate. Personal computer, email address, full web access will be provided. Scanning and colour printing facilities are available. Medical secretarial support will be provided from within the Directorate Clerical Team.

  • The post holders must be willing to travel to fulfil organisational needs and therefore, possession of a clean full driving licence is essential.
  • To participate in all CPD activities.
  • Appraisal and Revalidation: The post holders will be required to take part in the organisations consultant appraisal programme. The Trust has a supportive and well-resourced revalidation department within the Medical HR department. The revalidation process is underpinned by the Trusts robust clinical governance systems. Supporting information such as clinical outcome data, significant events and complaints is made available to individual doctors prior to appraisal. The Trust has an electronic appraisal portfolio system. There are an adequate number of trained appraisers. Top-up appraiser training and training in multisource feedback facilitation is arranged on a regular basis for all appraisers.
  • The job plan will be reviewed on an annual basis as part of the departmental appraisal process. All job plans must be approved by the Clinical Director, and both a successful appraisal and a signed-off job plan are required for pay progression. In the event of a dispute, or where a job plan cannot be agreed with the departmental head(s), the matter is taken initially to the Clinical Director. If the issue cannot be resolved at this level, then the next step is to involve the Medical Director. In the rare case where the Medical Director cannot resolve the matter, the Trust Board will act as the final arbiter.
