Job summary

This post presents a unique and exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified individual to help shape the creation of a new Haemato-oncology Centre of Excellence with an embedded Programme of clinical research. It has been created as part of major strategic investment by Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust (CCC) and the University of Liverpool (UoL) to expand and develop Haemato-oncology as a research-focused clinical speciality within the Liverpool City Region. The investment coincides with the consolidation of Haemato-oncology services currently based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH) and Aintree University Hospital (AUH) and their relocation into the £162M new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in central Liverpool (CCC-L). CCC-L is located directly adjacent to the new RLUH as well as the main UoL campus for biomedical research, thereby providing an unprecedented opportunity to integrate cutting-edge research into clinical and diagnostic cancer services.

The post includes the following key remits:

  • To contribute to the delivery of the CCC Myeloma & MDS service.
  • To contribute, and lead on clinical trials and research.
  • To contribute to a high-quality, sustainable, integrated lymphoma service for North Mersey.

Contract Details

The successful applicant's primary employer will be the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust.

Weekly Timetable of Commitments

This post will be based mainly on the Aintree hospital site with sessions and on-call work at CCCL. The notional job plan includes a total of 10 programmed activities (8.5 DCC (including 0.5 predictable on call) 1.5 core SPA, though some flexibility in PAs is negotiable. Clinical duties will include outpatient clinic work (myeloma and myeloid at both Aintree and Liverpool sites), haemato-oncology inreach and consultative work for Aintree site LUHFT, oversight of the busy haemato-oncology day unit, and participation in a shared on-call commitment covering CCCL (approximately 1:10). Formal laboratory sessions can be included depending on applicant interest.

On-call rota

The post holders will participate in the Consultant Haemato-oncology on-call rota, which is based at CCC/ LUHFT, with SpR operating a first on call system. This will be an approximately 1 in 12 on-call commitment. The on-call rota carries 0.5 PA for predictable on-call, and Category A supplement.

  • KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

The post has the following broad remits:

  • To contribute to the delivery of the CCC Myeloma & MDS service. The appointee will work closely with other colleagues in these specialities to deliver efficient, high-quality care in the in-patient, out-patient and day-ward settings.
  • To provide advice to clinicians at local and regional level. The appointee will establish effective channels of communication with referring clinicians throughout the region and link in with all relevant MDTs.
  • To contribute to the development of a high-quality, sustainable, integrated lymphoma service for North Mersey. The appointee will be expected to play a leading role in planning and delivering the reconfiguration of Haematology services at Aintree University Hospital and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. He/she will optimise the quality and efficiency of these key clinical services and ensure that relevant new developments are promptly implemented where appropriate
  • To contribute to the leadership, management, development and delivery of the overall CCC Haemato-oncology service. The appointee will be expected to engage in discussions and initiatives that extend beyond his/her own area of specialist interest.
  • To contribute to the regions Haemato-oncology research programme. The appointee will be expected to lead on lymphoma trials and engage more broadly with the Directorates wider research agenda.
  • To contribute to the educational programmes for trainees. The appointee will be expected to inspire and educate junior doctors through a combination of formal and informal teaching and support Haematology Specialty Registrars preparing for the Part I and Part II of the FRCPath examination.
  • To contribute to medical undergraduate teaching. The appointee will be expected to contribute to medical student placements at CCC. There may also be an opportunity to take on a teaching leadership role with the University of Liverpool Medical School.
  • To secure approval from the CCC Drugs and Therapeutics Committee for relevant new drugs.
  • To support supervision of junior doctors including appraisal and assessment.
  • To participate in the Trusts annual appraisal and job planning processes.
  • To contribute to clinical governance. The Trust is committed to the development of Clinical Governance. Each member of medical staff is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities within their Directorate, and each Directorate has a Consultant nominated as Clinical Governance lead. The activities include (but are not restricted to) audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence Based Practice.
  • To contribute to administrative activities within the Directorate. All consultants represent the Directorate on various committees within the Trust as well as taking responsibility for particular delegated areas according to their interests and availability. The Clinical Director is responsible for delegating these responsibilities and the post-holder should expect to be tasked with a formal administrative role.

  • ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

The new post holder will be provided with office space and access to home working where appropriate. Personal computer, email address, full web access will be provided. Scanning and colour printing facilities are available. Medical secretarial support will be provided from within the Directorate Clerical Team.
