Job summary
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated radiographers or Nuclear Medicine Technologists PET-CT skills to lead the PET service on our Wirral site. You would be required to work flexibly with the potential for extended days and Saturday working in PET as the service develops.
Our Radiology department is part of the Radiation Services Directorate and provides a service to the Trust and to other health organisations.
At Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Wirral, our PET-CT service is delivered using a Siemens Biograph mCT flow PET-CT scanner.Our new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool site houses a digital Siemens Biograph Vision.
We work collaboratively with Alliance Medical in providing the PET-CT service as part of the NHSE National Contract. We also carry out non-contract work such as scanning to aid with radiotherapy planning and clinical trials.
The department is dedicated to supporting staff development and training. such as Post Graduate qualifications, research-based activities and potential use of other Radioisotopes/Radiopharmaceuticals for scanning.
Main duties of the job
To provide professional clinical leadership for the PET-CT service and on occasion performing other Nuclear Medicine procedures.
To maintain a high quality, smooth running and cost effective PET-CT service through effective management of staff and facilities and innovate use of available resources.
Work in collaboration with Alliance Medical in delivering the PET-CT National Contract.
To initiate and implement policy and service development in the field of PET-CT.
Operational responsibility for the delivery of the PET-CT service and line manager for the PET-CT departmental staff.
To actively contribute and support the Radiology Operational Site Manager and PET-CT Clinical and Operational Lead in the delivery of an efficient, highly skilled and patient focused service, providing specialist advice.
To provide staff with training and knowledge to fulfil the requirements of the service, promoting an ethos of lifelonglearning and continuous professional development and to lead by example.
To undertake personal appraisal and development reviews (PADR's) for the PET-CT/Gamma camera team.
To act as RPS for the area.
Working towards maintaining QSI accreditation standards.

You will be part of a dedicated Radiology team which includes Imaging Assistants, Radiographers, Nuclear Medicine Technologists, modality Clinical Specialists, Quality leads and Site Managers, Radiologists and Physicists. Our team has recently maintained QSI accreditation at the Wirral site and achieved it at Liverpool.

Daily Responsibilities
- Undertake specialised imaging within any of the diagnostic departments, appropriate to knowledge, training and planned development. This should be carried out according to the competencies set for radiographers/ technologists at this level.
- Provide support for the Clinical Specialists and the Deputies to ensure the smooth running of the service on a day-to-day basis.
- Assist in the management of workflow and ensure that all data inputs are recorded for patient record integrity, statistical evaluation purposes and evidence of compliance with standards.
- Adapt planned schedules according to circumstances when required e.g. if emergency requests are made, radiopharmaceutical shortages, transport fails etc.
- Organise and manage the workflow in the department for which they are responsible in collaboration with or in the absence of the Clinical Specialist / Deputy.
- Participate in the education of other groups of staff as part of a course of study, professional development or an induction process, to ensure a wide knowledge of the role of Radiology within the patient journey.

Communication
- Communicate specialist information regarding Nuclear Medicine/PET-CT and the Service to users of the service, patients, relatives and other health professionals.

- Communicate sensitively with patients and their carers when discussing details of their medical condition.
- Communicate effectively with all users of the service verbally, on paper and electronically, to ensure clinical and service needs are met. This includes patients, carers and referrers, both within the Trust and externally (e.g. Wirral University Hospital Trust, Royal Liverpool University Hospitals and Alliance Medical).
- Liaise effectively with other staff within Radiology and Pre Treatment to optimise the patient experience e.g. co-ordinating appointments and instructions when patients attend more than one modality.
- Ensure that patients understand what is involved in the imaging procedure they are about to undertake and have agreed to exposure to ionising radiation prior to their examination.
Patient Care
- Supervise the PET-CT clinical team and the level of service provided.
- Undertake administration of radioactive tracers to patients and PET-CT scanning according to departmental protocols.
- Occasional support of the Nuclear Medicine department by undertaking complex Nuclear Medicine scans and procedures, including planar imaging and SPECT-CT.
- Deliver radioactive therapeutic agents to patients.
- Attend to the personal care of patients and their possessions whilst attending the Radiology department.
- Identify patients requiring further support services and guide them appropriately e.g. Safeguarding, Macmillan Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Establish from the patient, patients guardian or the referrer the patients suitability for receipt of I.V injections, assessing risk of any contraindications, ensuring appropriate aftercare in terms of radiation protection.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
- Interpret scan results to assess diagnostic and technical quality.
- Make judgements on how scanning protocols and techniques should be adjusted to suit individual patients.
- Analyse performance of equipment and make judgements about whether adjustments need to be made.
