Job summary

The Clatterbridge Cancer is the largest networked cancer centre serving a population of 2.4 million across Merseyside and Cheshire. Main duties of the job

Work to support the Biobank Administrator and work across all aspects of the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Biobank to provide an efficient and effective sample: collection, processing, storage/ shipping service keeping meticulous records and a full audit trail. To use the Laboratory Information Management System for sample management and ensure all equipment used is fit for purpose. To work flexibly and ensure adherence to legal and local procedural requirements. To support the Trials Laboratory sample processing, shipping and storage requirements on request.

The post-holder will join a dedicated and driven team to provide essential support in the CCC Biobank to support high quality sample processing, shipping, storage. The post-holder will be join a proactive laboratory team supporting clinical trials research and future prospective cancer research.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Sample processing and handling: The post-holder requires excellent technical skills to process blood, urine, saliva, cellular material, acites fluid (other samples as required) in a safe and timely fashion to ensure sample integrity before long-term storage.
  • Database Record-keeping: To maintain meticulous records using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), sample and consent form management, maintenance of a full audit trail of all processes and procedures pertaining to the samples, calibration/ maintenance records for equipment.
  • Organisation: To support the efficient running of the CCC laboratory including equipment maintenance and oversight.
  • Medical Records: Ability to mine the medical records for matched clinical information to the CCC Biobank samples ensuring anonymity and compliance with legislation and local policy.
  • Applications for Samples: Support in the processing/ obtaining applications process for samples according to CCC Biobank procedures- organise shipping and Material Transfer Agreements for samples- maintain a full audit trail and records.
  • Stock control: To proactively manage and order the consumables required to keep the biobank running.
  • SOPs and COSHH: Perform all duties according to SOPs, have the ability to write SOPs and perform COSHH assessments as required.
  • Work flexibly: The post-holder should be able to work flexibly with minimal supervision and in line with sampling requirements for the research programmes. The post-holder should have the ability to prioritise the workload to meet deadlines and proactively manage all aspects of sample collection and have the ability to provide cross-cover on sample handling for samples donated by participants on clinical trials.
  • GCLP: Have an appreciation and understanding of Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and be able when required to work to this standard with respect to the receipt, processing, storage, shipping and analysis of samples.
  • General laboratory work/ administration in support of the CCC research agenda and clinical trials sample requirements.
  • Support in clinical trials sample handling and process as required
  • Work across CCC biobank laboratories if required
  • Be able to enter data accurately and in a timely manner to LIMS and Databases pertaining to sample management.
  • Ability to provide reports on biorepository of samples within the Biobank and Trials Laboratory.
  • Understand and support the CCC Biobank research agenda
  • Work in close collaboration with the Research Governance and Sponsorship Manager and Research Governance Facilitator.
  • Liaise with personnel across the R&Innovation Directorate and other CCC Departments:
    • Consultants involved in research projects.
    • Clinical Research Associates/ representatives from commercial companies.
    • Academic collaborators
    • Research Practitioners.
    • Data co-ordinators.
