Main duties of the job

Plan the delivery of patient care and take responsibility for implementing and evaluating thatcare, using an appropriate nursing model.

To provide advice and education to patients, staff and learners within the directorate asrequired. To develop communication networks across specialities and throughout themultidisciplinary team.

Be able to prioritise their own workload and of those working with them such as learnersand Healthcare Assistants. When in charge of the ward know how to delegate what staff towhat duties and ensure the smooth running of the ward.

Know how to impart news of a distressing nature to patients and relatives. This will includepassing on news of a patient's death or helping a patient/relative understand a diagnosis suchas stroke .

Carry out nursing care to the highest possible standard according to Trust Policies andPractice and Clinical Guidelines. This requires a thorough understanding of policies andguidance related to for example: infection control, hygiene and individualised patient needs.

To administer patient medication according to Trust Policy, this includes the administrationof intravenous medication.

Carries out a full range of registered nurse duties, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patients condition and care with support from the nurse in charge. Maintain the privacy and dignity of all patients whilst adhering to Trust and department policies, reporting any difficulties with these duties to senior staff.

Works without direct supervision once key learning outcomes of the induction/ foundation or preceptorship programme have been completed. 6 month probationary period applies to career band 5 posts.
