Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Senior Staff Nurse with a keen interest in cancer services to join our friendly team. The Headland Unit is a face paced environment delivering systemic anti-cancer therapies in the outpatient setting. This post provides an exciting opportunity to assist in delivery of cancer treatments whilst being a visible and dynamic leader and role model.

This requires a nurse with experience in delivering SACT and significant post registration experience. Cancer Services provides a variety of opportunities in an ever changing landscape of treatment options.

Informal visits and discussions are actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

On-going education and development is actively encouraged and there is access to degree level modules in Chemotherapy, Oncology and Haematology, as well as opportunities to attend local, national and international conferences. This post will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to significantly develop their leadership skills and knowledge base.

Job responsibilities

To undertake chemotherapy / cytotoxic infusions

To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual patients and to supervise other staff in this activity.

To ensure an on-going welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the patient and their carers.

To act as an advocate for the patient and family, providing them with information and support and directing them to the relevant support services where appropriate.

To liaise with the multidisciplinary team, other departments and community services as necessary.

To develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care. This includes expanded role responsibilities, following appropriate training.

Working to protocol, responding to telephone calls from helpline who may require immediate advice/support

Contribute to clinical governance and ensure action is taken to minimise risk to both staff and patients. Carry out risk assessments where necessary.

To supervise and support staff members, deputising for the Ward Sisters as and when required, leading on projects / new developments, and taking an active managerial role in the department

To ensure that prescribed treatments are carried out and that all patients receive safe & appropriate care.

To ensure quality care is given by being familiar with agreed Department and Trust standards of care.

To assist in ensuring the safety of the department, actively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues, including the managing and reporting of incidents.

To ensure compliance with RCH Nursing policies and procedures

To manage the ward budget in conjunction with the Ward sisters ensuring efficient use of finances & identifying any savings that can be made to run the ward more efficiently
