Job summary

We have a new and exciting opportunity to join our Bone densitometry team to be instrumental in developing, implementing and running the Fracture liaison service within our expanding service along side the Lead in the DEXA team. The new fracture liaison service will systematically identify patients with a fragility fracture and find those at risk of future fractures. Reducing our NOF rates and improving our patients pathway and treatment of Osteoporosis for our patients in Cornwall.

Main duties of the job

Independently review BMD measurements and write reports to the patients GP, recommending suitable treatment and follow-up. (training and qualification to be obtained if necessary)

Co-ordinate and develop the FLS (fracture liaison service).

Run FLS clinics.

Correctly interpret BMD measurements, being aware of possible sources of error. (Training provided if necessary)

Work independently as a non-medical prescriber of specialist osteoporosis treatments (If appropriately trained and qualified)

Act as referrer, practitioner and operator, as defined by the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations, to facilitate provision of BMD service.

Perform BMD measurements, using highly sophisticated X-ray equipment.

Evaluate BMD results and relevant clinical information to decide on appropriate management of the patient.

Write reports to the requesting clinician, recommending management, treatment and follow-up.

Contribute to the development of Fracture Liaison and Osteoporosis Service.

Provide guidelines for treatment of different categories of osteoporosis patients

Providing support for the FLS telephone and manage and monitor all inquiries or concerns.

Provide specialist advice to GPs about the management of osteoporosis patients.

Effective use of the computerised radiology information system and PACS as well as electronic referral management system and other information technology (e.g. email, excel spread sheets etc.). Portfolio evidence to support specialist DEXA practice and knowledge of Metabolic bone disorders. Knowledge of Osteoporosis and Fragility fractures

Provide autonomous clinical reports on all DEXA scans as per defined scope of practice. Provide a verbal report to the Patient at the time of image acquisition when appropriate. To support the delivery of all DEXA examinations and procedures within DEXA and the Fracture Liaison Service To maintain a high level of clinical and technical expertise in DEXA and Bone Health to ensure the FLS standards maintained. To deliver training to other DEXA practitioners and Bone health speciality advisors. Act as an advisor, expert and learning resource within the specialty. Ensure a high standard of clinical care. To recognise anatomy and pathology (within scope of practice) to enable optimisation of imaging request further imaging as per protocols and liaise with Consultant Radiologists to arrange further images or scans when required. Adhere to IRR17 and IR(ME)R 2017. To provide the highest possible standard of care to patients and their carers. To be reflective, flexible and autonomous in thinking and outlook. To take an active part in quality, working in partnership with the Governance Lead in carrying out risk assessments and audits.   • DCR( R) or BSc Hons (Radiography) in Diagnostic Imaging or equivalent
  • Current state registration through HCPC or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Leadership courses
  • Completed non-medical prescribing course, recognised by NMC, post graduate level training.
  • Consultant led training in osteoporosis. Shadowing medical doctors in osteoporosis clinics. Clinic consultations
  • Attendance at national conferences or courses specialising in osteoporosis, fracture liaison, and metabolic bone disease
  • IR(ME)R trained
  • ROS qualification in DEXA Image acquisition.
  • Post Graduate qualification in DEXA reporting.
